Covered California - Recently moved to California
Brother moved to California on Thursday and immediately needed emergency services. Covered California's website says people can enroll within 60 days of moving here but the social worker at the hospital says he can't apply to medi-cal because he's not been a resident for 60 days. We've been getting conflicting information. I'm hoping I can find some help/clarification here. He's early 40s and has no income
Geico - NYS - looking to switch insurance carriers
I have Geico. My premium shot up another $150 yet again for a 6mo period. They blame NYS, but this has been the norm for them since joining them in Apr '21.
I want to shop around for full coverage insurance for my car, but unsure of who's even "affordable" anymore.
For those in NYS who switched off of Geico, which company did you end up going with? Did they provide similar coverage at a cheaper cost?
long-term disability insurance - Lump sum offer from long-term disability insurance
Hi. I have to decide whether to accept or reject a lump sum offer from long-term disability insurance.
I ran some numbers and after taxes, I think the lump sum offered is equivalent to almost 9 years of monthly benefits. In this math, I reduced the monthly benefit by 35% because I think that if I turn down the lump sum, I will have to get a lawyer to help me through whatever else the insurance company will try to do to reduce or deny benefits going forward. I had to appeal a denial a few years ago and back then, disability lawyers were taking about 33-40% of benefits. (I had decided to pay a flat fee for help with the appeal only.)
I became disabled at age 30 so I have quite a long ways to go and don’t know if I have the mental, emotional, and financial resources to get through another denial. I still have PTSD from that period, which was also during COVID. Even though I don’t see how I could suddenly start making money, I feel like at least the lump sum is a sure thing. If I reject it, what kinds of things will the insurance company do for the rest of my benefit period in order to balance their books? I am especially worried about extra uncertainty with SSDI. If my SSDI payments get cut, my long-term disability insurance payments are supposed to go back to the pre-SSDI amount, which is more than double what they’ve been paying since offsetting for SSDI. If this happens to a lot of people at once, what kinds of things will the insurance company do?
Right now, rejecting the lump sum feels like I would be subjecting myself to a scary black box of strategies to reduce or deny my benefits. I appreciate any information that could help me make a more informed decision. Thank you!!
Farmers - CA umbrella insurance questions - how to make it affordable with a youthful driver?
This year, my Farmers umbrella policy for 2 mil coverage premium increased from 1000/year to 3880/year. We are in California. Have umbrella/home/auto (2 cars, 2 drivers) with Farmers.
My son is 22 and has an accident on his record from 2.5 years ago. He has his own car titled in his name. His car is insured on my policy.
What would you do to lower the umbrella insurance cost? I am really struggling here.
If he gets his own car insurance, can I be sued for an accident he causes since he is a dependent on my taxes?
Thank you for any ideas.
Medica - Insurance not fully covering room and board after birth
I live in Minnesota where insurance companies are required to cover 48 hours of inpatient care after a vaginal birth. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/62A.0411#:~:text=Every%20health%20plan%20must%20provide,a%20mother%20and%20her%20newborn.
My insurance (Medica) is trying to make me pay $1850 of the $8300 billed to them for room and board after I gave birth. The stay was less than 48 hours. Is this legal? Do I have a course of action here?
Blue Cross Complete of Michigan - I just had my finger surgery
so I’m on Medicaid since I’m not working due to my finger injury. I got my surgery done a few months ago and they send me a bill today. I literally thought everything is going to be covered by the insurance. Maybe I should’ve asked questions ahead of time, but I wasn’t aware of this since I know few people who got surgeries and it was covered. I’m not working right now as well since my finger is still not healed. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do right now. do I contact Medicaid or the surgery place? Not sure. by the way, my insurance is Blue cross complete of Michigan. My insurance did pay for over half of the bill but just confused why it wasn’t covered completely.
State Farm - Homeowners insurance estimate missing items that were on last estimate
Hello, hurricane damage claim. State Farm. Upon reviewing my latest final estimate, I noticed that it is missing around $34k of damage for items: hazardous material/asbestos removal, water remediation and tree removal. These items have already been included in previous estimates but they are not listed in the most recent one. Two line items are removed completely and the tree removal was deducted from previous demolition line item now showing $500 when it was $9000 (with tree removal)
This estimate has increased based on some other items like additional roofing repairs and other things to the tune of about $40k, but with the removal of $34k in line items it only goes a little higher. I am concerned why those items would be removed. I have a call into the adjuster but looking to see if anyone has any ideas.
I can’t tell if they took it out to see if we’d notice and playing games or what. Those items have already been paid previously and the roof is complete as well so it doesn’t make sense to me.
United Healthcare - Email address for UHC complaint?
I had horrible customer service experiences with United Healthcare this past week. Horrible enough that I want to send a complaint to the appropriate people. I have unsuccessfully searched all over for an email address - I can't stand the thought of another phone call with them. Does anyone know the email address?
Erie - Home Insurance Up After Car Purchase
I have my cars and house bundled with Erie. I traded in my old car and bought a new car. When adding the new car they had to re-rate the policy and it jumped my homeowner policy up by 37%. No homeowner claims ever. Not sure how a new car justifies even looking at the home policy in the first place.
Northwestern Mutual - NWM whole life insurance
I feel stupid for falling for Northwestern Mutual’s whole life policy sales pitch when I was in my early 20’s when I clearly had no dependents or need to have such a policy. I finally came to my senses recently and cancelled the policy, took the relatively small cash value and ran. My question really is how is that ethical for NWM to be preying on recent college grads to bring in high commission policies they do not need? The number one sign I did the right thing in cancelling my policy was how angry my “advisor” got when I stood my ground on our call.
