TIAA - Options for moving money from a retirement plan
My employer is putting our retirement funds (and a very nice match) into a TIAA Group Retirement Annuity account. I really don't want my money in an annuity, but there are no other options through their retirement plan, and the match is too good to pass up. Barring a major incident, I will likely work for them until I retire, and I don't anticipate taking the annuity upon retirement because it won't be enough to live on. Moving money out of a GRA takes 10 years, and I don't think I can start that process until I leave the company, leaving me in a potentially bad spot for up to 10 years after I retire.
Does anyone know if I have an option I'm not seeing? I am putting money into an IRA as well, but not nearly as much, and I anticipate the bulk of my retirement savings will be tied up in this idiotic GRA.
Wawanesa Insurance - Update: Wawanesa Insurance Cancellation – Broker Responded, But Now I’m Facing $2,500+ Upfront Cost to Switch
Hey everyone,
This is a follow-up to my earlier post about trying to cancel my Wawanesa auto insurance (I’m the guy paying $750/month for a commercial plan meant for Uber Eats, which I barely do anymore). My regular broker had gone silent for a while, but I finally got in touch.
Here’s the update:-
My broker confirmed I can cancel the policy early.
However, he says I’ll have to pay two months' worth of premium upfront as a penalty — that’s around $1,500.
The new policy I’m eyeing (with TD Bank) is non-commercial and about $450/month, but they also require 2 months paid upfront to start coverage — that’s another $900.
So basically, to switch policies, I’d need to cough up $2,400–$2,500 upfront, just to get out of this $750/month cycle.
Now I’m stuck asking myself:
Is it even worth switching, or should I just suck it up and keep paying monthly till my current policy ends in November?
Will I even save enough in the long run to justify the upfront hit?
Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation — switching from commercial to personal auto insurance mid-term?
Any creative options or negotiation tips I could try with either Wawanesa or TD?
I’m still trying to be financially smart here — just don’t want to end up spending more just to spend less later. Appreciate all your input!
Progressive - Progressive requiring I agree to arbitration to answer questions
I was rear-ended on the freeway (not merging, just came to a stop in traffic and the guy behind me... didn't stop). We exchanged info, I got an estimate from a bodyshop, he opened a claim with his insurance (a Progressive subsidiary). I also alerted my insurance that there had been an accident but did not open a claim. Now I got a message from Progressive asking me to answer questions about the accident. I know them asking for an account of the accident or even coming out to see my car is standard - but they require me to agree to arbitration and a bunch of other terms before even seeing what the questions are. I have no confirmation that the other driver filed the claim assuming fault for the accident so agreeing to all of Progressive's terms seems wrong before having more information. I would be fine emailing photos, my info, and an account of the accident to an agent but the other driver says he doesn't have the info of the agent assigned to the claim. Is it all automated to the point where there is no person that I can communicate with outside of this form?
Chase - Am I Eligible for Chase $900 Bonus?
I originally signed up for the Chase $900 bonus approximately 18 months ago, but didn't end up depositing any money into either the checking or savings accounts (ended up not having enough liquidity at the time due to unexpected events).
They ended up closing both accounts after 30 days with a $0 balance on both. I confirmed this with a Chase representative on the phone. However, he claimed I was not eligible even though I would appear to technically meet the eligibility criteria (account not closed in the last 90 days; no accounts closed with negative balance in the last 3 years; only allowed to receive one new checking and one new savings account opening bonus every two years from the last coupon enrollment date and only one bonus per account). He claimed that I had closed my account too recently, even though the plain text of the offer would seem to suggest otherwise.
Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this?
Is there something else I'm missing here as to why I might not be eligible?
Will Chase let me know whether I am eligible or not when I open the accounts? Or do I only find out when I end up receiving (or not receiving) the bonuses?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
State Farm - State Farm denying homeowners insurance
Is anyone else having trouble getting State Farm to insure your house for homeowners insurance? I have a fixer upper house with a pool and we fixed the gates and cleaned up around the pool area but the pool hasn't been used in years. Tried multiple times to get homeowners insurance but keep denying.
Anthem Blue Cross - would there be a difference between mental health telehealth and in office for mental health coverage
ive asked anthem blue cross five times and not getting anywhere. my mental health is completely covered. i made an appointment to do telehealth and they said i have a copay of an office visit. the insurance company offers telehealth through their own app online. what i want to know is - how can i find info on the telehealth offerings that my insurance cover. am i wrong to assume they should cover the entire cost since its under mental health. do insurance companies have different rules for telehealth? have they come up with different rules and why cant i just read about the rule? they keep saying send them the cpt code? so would it be normal that they cover mental health one hundred percent but telehealth for mental health is the cost of an office visit?
Cigna - Employer offers three tiers of health insurance, open market plans are similarly priced
I work for an employer that does Cigna healthcare with three tiers, but the costs for all three plans are similar to the three tiers that Blue Cross Blue Shield offers on the open market. I currently have a premium plan with BCBS for ~$1400/month and my employer’s premium plan is also ~$1400/month.
How do companies get away with “offering” healthcare insurance that isn’t subsidized at all? This seems very disingenuous
American Express - Warning about Amex "Pay over time" feature
I had some large expenses come up that I couldn't afford, so I used the "Plan it" feature on my platinum card. Basically, you pay a fee, and then Amex lets you make installment payments on the charges. What I did not know at the time is that you pay interest on these payments in addition to the fees! The fees themselves were a couple hundred bucks, and I picked a 6 month payment plan under the assumption that I was paying the fees instead of interest. Am I overlooking something, or is the payment plan completely useless? I would have just carried the balance if I'd known what I was actually signing up for
Edit: I confirmed with amex that I am using the "plan it" feature and not "Pay over time" so I shouldn't be paying interest, but because I have carried a balance that isn't part of the payment plan, I'm being charged interest on both. This feels pretty scummy and deceptive
Labcorp - Nurse accidentally did the wrong blood tests on me— Do I still have to pay for them?
\*EDIT: I've been corrected by a few people-- The person I was interacting with was probably a medical technician/phlebotomist, not a nurse. Sorry for the mix-up in the title.
Hi all. I have a problem, and I'm not sure what to do.
Earlier this week I (24F) went to a Labcorp office to get blood tests done in advance of my hematology appointment (this is something I have to do multiple times a year). When I got there and was checked in, the medical technician\* asked me if I was there on the orders of "Doctor Smith" (fake name). I told her that while Doctor Smith was one of my doctors, I was actually there at the request of my hematologist, "Doctor Johnson." The Labcorp worker told me that there was nothing from Doctor Johnson's office in the system, and the request from Doctor Smith was the only one she could see, so it HAD to be the right one. Since she was the expert, I assumed she was right and went along with it.
Well, that was a bad move. Instead of giving me the tests I needed, the medical technician\* redid ten completely unrelated tests that I had already gotten done in August. Now I found out that they're planning to charge me $220 for the incorrect tests, plus I need to go back and have more blood drawn because I still haven't done any of the tests I need for my hematology appointment. Is there anything I can do to not pay this initial $220 bill? It really feels unfair to me, mostly because I already had to pay an identical bill back in August when I got these tests done the first time. I've already called the Labcorp, my insurance, and the hematologist's office, but all of them seem really unsure about the situation. Which one should I keep calling?
For extra context... I live in Maryland and make roughly $65k a year. I'm on my dad's insurance.
GEICO - 1 month old car hit on passenger door, GEICO asking to take the claim on my policy even as person accept his fault
Hello Everyone, My car was hit from side by another person backing out in school parking. He accepted his fault and gave me his insurance and DL. Both of us have GEICO so thought it would be easy claim. When I put the claim, Geico reached out saying he has coverage issues and asked to use my policy for damage repair as No fault even though his policy showed active from 02/01/2025 - 08/01/2025 and my car being hit on 3/28/2025. GEICO mentioned it would be difficult in case person doesn't pay. How do I proceed, and what about the diminished value as GEICO saying if claim is put on my policy, GEICO will not pay Diminished claim. What are my options, can someone please suggest as car is just 1 month old. There is big dent on the passenger side. How can someone insurance shows active from Feburary but they will not pay. Appreciate your advice. Thank you.
