Northwestern Mutual - Life and disability insurance question
Hi everyone, I got to this forum after seeing some "NW mutual life insurance is a scam" posts and i'm not sure if I got scammed. I was in medical training when a financial adviser told me about getting disability and life insurance.. with NW mutual... I'm 35 years old, very healthy, I pay about 87$ for 2M Term to 80 policy with no annual dividend. And my premium for disability is $110.. Looking for advice if I should switch to a different broker (if thats an option) or just general advice.
Allstate - Allstate denied my claim on their insured. Anything I can do?
I was in a car accident yesterday. A person ran a red light as I was entering an intersection and ripped across the front of my car. Bumper cover was destroyed, and the hood won't open now. Unfortunately there were no witnesses (no one stopped, anyway), and the other person's insurance company (Allstate) says I'm at fault (I suspect the other driver lied about running the light). Is it worth the effort trying to sue for what is likely to be $10,000 or less in damage? Will it be possible to get an attorney to take such a small case?
parents' insurance company - Drivers license being suspended due to not being covered by my parents insurance.
What Should I Do?
A few weeks ago, I was in a car accident while driving my parents' car that I wasn’t in fault. When I called my parents insurance company they told me i wasn’t covered by their insurance policy and didn't say anything and said to call the other party to solve this they didn't informed me on any of the steps so I assumed that I have to only call the other persons insurance. I wasn’t covered under my parents insurance, as they excluded me from due to not having 3 years o experience and I had no idea how much this would impact me. This was totally my fault for not being informed. My parents don’t speak good English and the language barrier wasn’t clear whether they added me or removed me from their policy. I'm a full time student taking 30 units this spring and currently I live with my boyfriend near my campus and visit my parents about once a month. That day, I just wanted to go to the gym and didn't think much about it so I drove myself since my parents were busy. I never thought that one small decision could turn into something so overwhelming. I’ve only been driving for a year, and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. I didn’t even know that I was supposed to notify the DMV if the accident caused more than $1,000 in damage. I’ve tried everything I called my parents’ insurance company, I called the DMV to request a hearing but they told me there’s nothing I can do because I wasn’t covered. Now, I’m facing the possibility of having my license suspended, and I feel completely lost.
Is there *any* way to stop this from happening? I don’t want one mistake to take away my ability to drive. If anyone has advice or knows what I can do, I’d truly appreciate it.
National General - Have Filed Suit Against National General in Small Claims Court
Basically, they screwed me over on an accident, failed to defend me when I was clearly not at fault, even according to the law. Showed law to the adjuster. Adjuster said "There is nothing you can do, or show me that will make me reconsider my decision." I said "even the law, sir?" He said "Nothing." Then tried to get my claim file a couple years after the fact, and they essentially denied me access and blocked my access to my online account by changing something in my name and changing my DOB. Filed for breach of contract, and their lawyer answered claim saying "he's not our customer", trying to pin it on the underwriter, who, as it turns out, isn't even the real underwriter! It's a fronting arrangement with multiple layers of shell companies.......totally not transparent. Complaint to DOI has been under review, but way past deadline for response or resolution. This is gonna be a fun project. Anybody run into something like this before?
Brighthouse Financial - Challenges in the hardship surrender an inherited life insurance annuity from Brighthouse Financial (previously MetLife).
Location: New York
I am trying to navigate the ongoing challenges in the hardship surrender of a life insurance annuity (qualified) I inherited from my father when he passed in NOV 2013. He was 82 years old when he passed and was already taking disbursements (Metlife at that time).
In early 2014, I truly thought that I had requested a full pay-out on the life insurance; however, Metlife then informed me that I had already annuitized the policy (?), and it was documented on my 2014 annual FMV notice from Metlife that there was "no servicing agent on record". At that time, I did not get too upset about the mix-up because my family was doing fine financially, then. However, I am now 61 and my wife is 62; and now our financial situation has turned dire, as last year we already liquidated the other inherited life insurance annuity from Security Benefit which was super easy and paid-out within days. The reason for this eminent need is that my wife lost her job in March 2024 and she has been unsuccessful in finding a new role in this unsure job market (>500 job applications), and her NY unemployment insurance was exhausted long ago. We also have three sons, with two currently being in college in which one of them has autism in which I have dedicated my life, acting as his personal attendant of sorts to assist his K-12 education. His disability application for SSDI is still in the appeal process with the SSA, so we have paid for his first year of community college, with a great deal of assistance from me.
Unfortunately, after several documented/recorded calls with Brighthouse, they have failed to provide me with a copy of my original contract, or the ability to even open an on-line account. Whenever I call them, I am not even treated as a real Brighthouse customer as my annuity contract is immortalized allowing me no visibility of my account, and I am informed that I will not be able to withdrawal the money until age 73. After 11 years, the annuity is only worth \~$28,000 (started out at $37,000 in 2013). It's not a lot of money to most people, but it could save my family at this point! I would be so grateful if the legal expert in this community could help me navigate down the correct paths to possibly resolve this solution as we really can't afford a financial planner or attorney at this time. I'm not even sure that I'm using the correct surrender request form (EF-70N-DXC 10/23) because I never get a response from Brighthouse, and I am very gracious in my communications with them.
Bristol West - Need help regarding insurance
Edit: Total amount that was for the insurance that month was like $400 something. I think around $430. Not sure if that has something to do with it
Hey so I had gotten my car back a couple of months ago. To put it short, for some dumbass reason my ass didn't think I would need insurance to take the car off the lot and didn't factor that into it, as the last time I gotten a car I went to a shady shitty dealership which let me drive off with just liability. So I had set myself up with Bristol West. Thing is I did not have the money for the insurance but it went through because I did an option that would collect over a few days. It showed as active for me to collect my car. Anyways immediately like a day or two later, I decide to go with Progressive which was much cheaper and canceled my plan with Bristol by calling them. (I used Bristol to pick up my car but then changed it to Progressive and they took that) After it got canceled I got some mail saying that I owe $110.
Now question. I do know that say if you cancel mid-cycle or early they give like a "refund" or don't make you pay the whole amount. My question is, does $110 seem right for literally using them for about a day or so. Keep in mind they couldn't even charge me but it showed my acc as active. Active enough to try and get my car. Does anyone have any experience with this? How do they decide how much to charge you when you cancel, Does it matter when you cancel or they just give you a rate which you have to pay. I just realized that they sent it to debt collections and want it.
Medicaid - Medicaid in New Mexixo
Location: New Mexico, USA
Hello,
I work at a bed n breakfast. I make $15/hr, work about 20-25 hours per week with some fluctuations, 3-4 days per week, and will not work for 2 months out of the year when it is closed. I live nearby in a camper off grid. No criminal history.
My employer pays in cash and does not offer health insurance or any benefits. I am working to apply for medicaid since my application for insurance through the marketplace flagged as possibly eligible for medicaid. They said I need a letter verifying my hours and wage from my employer. When I asked my employer for this, she said she didn't want to because of not wanting to draw attention to the business. So now I'm stuck without health insurance and wondering what to do. I am thinking that she may not be running the business legally on her end after this since she said she didnt want to have anyone from the state asking about the business.
I am wondering, if I contact medicaid and inform them of this, will the business be audited and ruined? She is very vindictive and I just want to be cautious about my next move. I want health insurance of course, but it is a very rural area and the only business for 35 miles in any direction, so a lot of people rely on it. Should I just quit? Should I just get coverage through the marketplace? I don't really have much money so I would like to try and limit my expenses.
Thank you for any information or advice.
Bamboo - SoCal Residents -- What homeowners insurance do you have?
We live in LA and I've been looking at our homeowners insurance, which is through Bamboo. I fear that Bamboo is not great based on the fact that I've never heard of anyone else using it AND the reviews online are awful.
I know so many companies no longer insurance LA... does anyone have recs? I've read about Amica, Chubb, Pure -- but they are more expensive (how much more)?
Would love any advice!
United Healthcare - Prior Authorization Question
Hey all,
I’ve been having issues with my insurance trying to approve a surgery. My surgeon submitted a prior authorization and they denied it. They resubmitted it with a different diagnosis to meet the criteria. They usually take 5-10 business days. But within 48 hours I checked my UHC account and it said “cancelled”. What does it mean when it’s been “cancelled” and not actually denied?
I have United Healthcare through my mom’s work.
Thanks!
UnitedHealthcare - Doctor wants payment up front—Insurance says not to
I have UHC and while taking care of some things on the phone with a representative I asked a question out of curiosity which was just my confusion that sometimes when I get my botox for migraines my provider has me pay nothing and I get the bill later, other times I just have to make "a" payment and then get the bill later. When I say get the bill later in both cases I mean after the claim has gone through insurance I then get the billed amount I owe, and the portal for UHC updates with my EOB (I use the EOB to apply for a savings program to be reimbursed by a third party). My most recent appointment however they made me pay the full amount of botox up front otherwise they refused to treat me. I am disabled without this treatment so I just found a card with enough money on it and gave it to them. The insurance representative told me they aren't to make me pay more than a voluntary small amount of my choice if I want to, and that they aren't supposed to deny me my treatment that they approved. She told me to not pay next time and if they push back to call United and get a representative on the phone. My mother used to work medical scheduling however and she insists they can make me pay whatever amount they want and reimburse me later. I am thinking my mom might be more right but just want to hear it straight. For the record I am in the (slow) process of changing migraine treatment providers for a number of reasons related to poor communication or miscommunication.
