Trupanion - Best pet insurance for brand new puppy with parasite?
I rescued a new 11 week old puppy and 24 hours later he was hospitalized for 3 days with cystoisospora, a parasite, and severe malnutrition. The rescue kept him in awful conditions and he was caked in stuff (food? Feces?) when I picked him up. He is coming home today with fair odds of survival and I am shopping for a new plan for him.
I have a 30 day policy with Trupanion from the rescue but they don’t cover parasites (wtf). I’ve already spent $8500 on his care. He’s going to need a lot of frequent fecal samples and re-checks of his bloodwork. He also needs another round of de-worming. Does anyone have recommendations?
HealthyPaws - Switching from HealthyPaws?
My 2-year-old husky/rottie mix, Raymond, is insured through HealthyPaws. They have been wonderful- it's $57/month for 90% reimbursement with a $250 deductible. As I'm sure you can guess from his breed, he has had several expensive accidents, especially when he was little. HealthyPaws has covered all of them and saved me thousands. There's also no annual limit.
My boyfriend and I live together now, and we want to insure his 8-year-old greyhound/lab mix, Tucker. He's healthy and has no pre-existing conditions. I called HealthyPaws to add him, but they said the only option is $69/month for 50% reimbursement with a $1000 deductible. While looking into other options, I found tons of reviews saying that HealthyPaws significantly increases premiums each year. Now, I'm considering moving Ray too and putting both dogs on a new plan.
Despite competitive pricing, it looks like Lemonade is bad about premium hikes too. Trupanion would triple Ray's premium and make Tucker's absolutely ridiculous. Nationwide only offered Tucker a dirt cheap plan that doesn't cover illness. PetsBest gave me a great quote for both dogs, but has mixed reviews about coverage and price hikes.
I'd appreciate any recommendations/advice. I'm looking for a company that is able to do 90% reimbursement and a lower deductible for Tucker despite his age, doesn't increase premiums much each year, has no annual limit (or a very high one), and doesn't deny claims for stupid reasons. Add-on riders for routine wellness are a plus as long as the limits are reasonable- we spend $400+ each on Simparica Trio each year, and their annual exams are pricey.
SPOT - SPOT insurance denying coverage for hip dysplasia claiming pre-existing despite issue appearing 3 months after coverage began
**THE PROBLEM**
Our dog is a 7 year old English Bulldog. We had been with Nationwide pet insurance since he was a puppy and LOVED them! They were absolutely outstanding but then in 2024 their premiums went up like 3x-4x out of nowhere. I looked for some new providers and SPOT came in with a decent price (although still much more expensive than we were paying before). Our policy with SPOT started in August 2024 and Nationwide was cancelled the following month so there would be no lapse in coverage.
**THE BACKGROUND**
In November, he started having difficultly walking. I took him to the new vet he's been going to for the last few years and said it's hip dysplasia and is recommended stem cell treatment (we have stem cells stored with Ardent from when he was a puppy). I submitted the claim for his doctor visit and associated blood work and they denied it saying pre-existing condition. Apparently, in his medical records, back in early 2021 I had taken him into our previous vet because he was vomiting. They were concerned of a blockage (maybe ate something) and took xrays. They had made an incidental mention that bi-lateral his dysplasia was noticed while checking for blockage but that was it. I didn't even know about it. He never had any trouble walking, he was never seen for it, never received any treatment for it, and was never talked about or mentioned again by his previous or current vet.
**THE QUESTION**
Do I have any grounds or avenues for appealing this denial of coverage? On paper, they are saying pre-existing condition which I understand but he never was seen for it, never had signs or symptoms, never treated for it, and I didn't even know about it. It was an incidental comment 4 years ago while checking for something else. Since English Bulldogs are prone to hip dysplasia, I don't think it would be uncommon to observe some level of it - He was only 3 years old at that time. I live in CA if that matters.
Trupanion - Disappointed with Trupanion’s Coverage – Not Worth It!
I initially chose Trupanion because of its **per-condition deductible**, which seemed like a great deal. The idea that once you pay the deductible for a condition, you’re covered for life sounded like a financial safety net. **But there’s a catch**—what you think a condition is and what they classify it as can be entirely different.
I have a **golden retriever** and live in **California**, where vet care is already expensive. Over the years, I’ve **paid thousands out of pocket** for the same recurring issues, thinking I'd eventually see the benefit of having met the deductible. Instead, I was repeatedly disappointed to find that Trupanion either classified the conditions differently or found other ways to deny meaningful coverage.
Yesterday, when they pulled the same stunt yet again for one of my recent claims, I finally sat down and did the math. And what I found was infuriating:
* **Total amount claimed (across multiple years):** $18,785.07
* **Total amount paid by Trupanion:** $4,074.02
* **Percentage of total expenses actually covered:** **21.69%**
And this doesn’t even factor in the **monthly premiums** I paid on top of it. When I do the math, I might as well have **skipped insurance altogether** and just covered my pet’s medical bills myself. It would have cost me about the same, if not less.
Now, I am considering switching to a different pet insurance. While they have a waiting period for **curable pre-existing conditions**, I am **happy to wait it out**—because let’s be honest, Trupanion isn’t paying for those conditions anyway. At this point, I might as well **put everything out of pocket** while I wait for better coverage.
If you're considering Trupanion, **think twice**. Their deductible structure sounds promising, but their classification loopholes mean you might **never actually reach it** for conditions you thought were covered. At this point, I feel like I’ve wasted money that could have gone directly into my pet’s care instead of into an insurance plan that gave me little in return.
I wouldn’t recommend Trupanion to anyone expecting true financial relief from pet medical expenses. **Save your money, start an emergency pet fund, and skip the frustration!**
Spot - I guess Spot is a good one
I got a cat in November and enrolled her under Spot, starting a plan at $17.87 / month.
I took her to the vet in December to check why this otherwise healthy cat had no interest in chewing food, and they said they said she had a bad case of FORL and they recommended removing the impacted teeth, which were most likely causing her pain.
I submitted two claims to Spot, one for the first visit in December and one for the expensive teeth removal surgery in February. For both, I only attached the vet invoices which included the vet medical notes.
Initially, both claims were rejected for lack of inclusive information about my cat's health, meaning the SOAP notes. I ended up finding and submitting the form that was given to me from the shelter when I got her, which only contained her vaccinations, record of spaying and a mention of medicine for diarrhea. I explained to Spot that was all I had, and no one knew anything about my cat's health in her life prior to the shelter.
Just a few days later, I got notified that they had approved both claims reimbursing me $21 out of the $78 visit and $288 out of the $697 surgery.
**That means that my total annual billing for the insurance is $214 ($17.87 x 12) and by March alone I have already been reimbursed $309. I'll take it.**

Petplan - Pet Insurance Costs
Hi, I’m trying to find pet insurance for my 4 month old Maine coon but Pet plan is extortionate. I don’t know any other insurance company that pays direct rather than potentially being stuck with a huge bill to pay upfront. £47 a month seems high for a young indoor kitten/cat. Why is Pet plan so expensive compared to other providers, do they offer more or is it because the pay vets direct? Can anyone advise if cheaper policy with insurer that will pay vet direct?
Odie - Update: ODIE IS A SCAM
**Odie is taking my monthly money and not holding up their end of the bargain.**
**UPDATE:** Odie responded to my Google review and processed my three claims. They denied coverage for all of them, stating in the EOB "preexisting condition." My dog developed this condition while a policy holder on ManyPets, ManyPets processed claims for this condition regularly (which is why we have the insurance), and Odie stated there would be continuation of care.
**I've filed a claim with my state insurance commissioner, thanks to the recommendation of this sub.**
I was switched to Odie from ManyPets when ManyPets sold and want the world to know: ODIE IS A SCAM. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN & DEF DON'T SIGN UP. Aside from the significant increase in monthly cost and 20k coverage limit on a previously unlimited plan, Odie is...nowhere to be found. My claims are not being processed, nobody answers the phone, the chatbot isn't responsive, and I literally cannot get any information.
Trupanion - Trupinion
I’m having. Hard time with them right now!! I got my female cat spayed n hernia repair through the local spca low income program before I got her insurance
Fast foward she now has pet insurance with trupinion since Jan she was spayed/hernia in September
They keep emailing me n calling me for records on her spay n repair said they have contacted the SPCA n they haven’t emailed back ! I contacted the spca they don’t keep records or notes form the spay program
So they emailed them n told them that! So now they are saying without proof she was spayed or hernia repair if I ever file a claim it may take longer to resolve stuff!
I’m starting to think I’m paying them monthly for nothing ! I got insurance so I didn’t have a huge vet bill if she needs to go to the vet n cause they pay direct !
Anyone else have this issue? I mean what happens when someone gets a cat off the street or wherever n it’s already been spayed etc but they don’t know from where n don’t have records!
Ugh! I feel like I’m wasting money!
Waggle - UK Doggo Insurance?
My dog (cocker) is just over 2 years old, I was with Waggle before but they just keep increasing the price each year and I have never needed them for anything. No claim, no nothing & the only vet she ever needed I paid out of pocket.
So decided to cancel and look at other options. I doubt I'll get lucky but is any insurance like an NHS service where I can just pay a monthly fee then everything is covered?
Like how us as a human went into a hospital and It's free as we pay for it monthly
I spoke to my vet who said insurance works like reimbursement where I would have to outright pay example £10,000 then claim it back from my insurance but I don't have £10,000 just sitting in my bank so how would it work otherwise?
(first time doggo owner so sorry if these seem stupid asking)
Metlife - Pet Insurance
So I did away with my previous wellness plans and went with Metlife insurance. At first they were great approving regular visits quickly and I was reimbursed quickly. But I've noticed since before December now they take extremely long to even assign the claims and then review them. It always seems like I have to reach out to them in which they always need the Doctors notes before they will approve anything. My pupps have gotten ear infections, ruptured glands, and upset stomach with diarrhea this year and it has taken several weeks and phone calls to get the claim processed and a couple I am still waiting on. So I am thinking of canceling them. Would love recommendations of a better company with a better app as well.
