I initially chose Trupanion because of its per-condition deductible, which seemed like a great deal. The idea that once you pay the deductible for a condition, you’re covered for life sounded like a financial safety net. But there’s a catch—what you think a condition is and what they classify it as can be entirely different. I have a golden retriever and live in California, where vet care is already expensive. Over the years, I’ve paid thousands out of pocket for the same recurring issues, thinking I'd eventually see the benefit of having met the deductible. Instead, I was repeatedly disappointed to find that Trupanion either classified the conditions differently or found other ways to reduce meaningful coverage. To make things worse, Trupanion doesn’t cover exam fees, or certain other essential costs, meaning that even if they approve a claim, you still end up paying a large portion of the bill yourself. So between denied claims, reclassified conditions, and excluded fees, I was left covering far more than I ever expected. Yesterday, when they pulled the same stunt yet again for one of my recent claims, I finally sat down and did the math. And what I found was infuriating: Total amount claimed (across multiple years): $18,785.07 Total amount paid by Trupanion: $4,074.02 Percentage of total expenses actually covered: 21.69% And this doesn’t even factor in the monthly premiums I paid on top of it. When I do the math, I might as well have skipped insurance altogether and just covered my pet’s medical bills myself. It would have cost me about the same, if not less. Now, I am considering switching to a different pet insurance. While they have a waiting period for curable pre-existing conditions, I am happy to wait it out—because let’s be honest, Trupanion isn’t paying for those conditions anyway. At this point, I might as well put everything out of pocket while I wait for better coverage. If you're considering Trupanion, think twice. Their deductible structure sounds promising, but their classification loopholes, exclusions, and lack of coverage for essential vet costs mean you might never actually reach your deductible for conditions you thought were covered. At this point, I feel like I’ve wasted money that could have gone directly into my pet’s care instead of into an insurance plan that gave me little in return. I wouldn’t recommend Trupanion to anyone expecting true financial relief from pet medical expenses. Save your money, start an emergency pet fund, and skip the frustration!

I booked an appointment to have my dog spayed. After reading the documentations I decided to get pet insurance in case anything should happen during surgery. The next day I got pet insurance with Trupanion and they had no issues taking $200 from me immediately. That night Around 8 PM my dog got the Zumiez and kept running back-and-forth jumping on and off the couch and her kneecap Dislocated and popped out of place. This Caused laxatated Patela and is classified as accidental. However after taking the $200 I find out that there is a waiting period. Five days for accidental and 30 days for illness. It seemed a little odd as I have already paid my premiums for the month and couldn't understand why I wouldn't be able to use them if I've already paid and my effective date started when I paid. However the company refused my claim and stated it is an illness and will now be classified as a pre-existing illness even though it happened after my start date of premiums and they will not cover anything going forward that has to do with my dogs knees.. this is the biggest insurance scam I have ever heard of. If I'm paying premiums for something that wasn't existent prior to me not having insurance, It should be covered. However after sharing this information with the insurance company they continue to argue saying it's an illness even though the medical vet said it's not an illness it's accidental. This company does have some pretty shady reviews however it seemed to be the only company that did direct billing so I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt. However I would suggest saving your money and going with a better company. Because Trupanion just wants to take all your money and they don't wanna pay out anything When the time is needed. I have demanded a full refund of my money and to cancel premiums and I will never tell my friends or family with pets to go with this company. save your money!!

Did not accept breeder code si had to contact support directly to get refund. That was handled very professionally and quickly

My initial sign-up went through my vet. When I went to the Trupanion site to complete the registration, it failed because my vet had used the "&", an illegal character. I could have fixed that, but editing the information was not allowed. Then I called the Trupanion number. The woman on the line was very nice and completed the sign-up process for me over the phone. I got a welcome email from Trupanion with a link to set up my account online. I clicked the link and was asked to sign in using my email and password. I did not have a password and was not provided a temporary password from Trupanion. I tried clicking the "Forgot Password" link and was sent a code to my email address. I used the code, it thanked me for verifying my email address, then stated that "A user with the specified credential could not be found." I called the phone number again and the woman was unable to help me. She said she would contact technical support to report the problem on my behalf, and I have since heard nothing.

I called in and the person who answered didn’t seem to know much. Hadn’t watch any of the videos by your CEO and didn’t know they even were there. He said I don’t look at our web site. I order anyways so time will tell if your CEO is telling the truth and you an actually deliver on her promises.

Update April 2025: Trupanion has looked into this matter and resolved it. They confirmed that there was no confirmation to cancel the plan after listening to the recording of our call. I am very pleased that they attended to this matter so quickly and corrected the error. The enrolment process went well and the person was very knowledgeable and friendly. The issue I had was that I had been a Trupanion member since my dog was just a few weeks old. I called to cancel my insurance due to an appeal dispute and the Trupanion employee suggested some helpful things to do in order to have a stronger appeal. I then told her to wait to cancel my insurance while I spoke to my vet, but I received noticed that it was canceled anyway. By the time I contacted Trupanion to get my pet back on the plan, they said too much time had elapsed (just over a month) so they would have to enrol her at a four year old dog rate (much higher), despite the fact I'd already been a Trupanion customer for four years with the same pet. It's disappointing that this was not recognized at re-enrolment.

While working in vet med I have always been a big advocate for pet insurance, Trupanion being one that I recommend time and time again. I am however disappointed in my experience over the past year. I had active policies on all 4 of my pets from the time of adoption as puppies/kittens. They are generally healthy pets, well cared for, regularly vetted, ect. I unfortunately had issues with my coverage being cancelled due to payment issues while fraud was linked to the card used. The representative I spoke to initially was helpful in assisting me with information to connect with a different rep who was the only one who could reactivate my policies. I expressed my concerns that I work overnights and typically am not awake during day time hours but gave a window of time I would adjust my schedule. I was not called by them and ended up playing phone tag which came to a dead end, ultimately leaving me with no coverage for any of my pets. Recently I tried again, although time had passed, I was hopeful that it could be resolved but was left with the only choice being to open a new policy for each of my pets. My total payment went up around $100 even while increasing all of the deductibles. My pets are no longer covered for conditions they had during the time of their active policy. I’m so disappointed in the resources and reps available to help during various hours.

We pay for pet insurance and expect it to at least cover vaccinations or annual exams, but NO, it doesn't, and they're very expensive. It's only accidents. It's better not to buy this insurance. IT'S USELESS. We just signed up so I have very little to go on but one thing that I would suggest is once you sign up a new customer it would be great if you would provide a wallet sized card that shows, we carry this insurance and maybe an overview of the coverage?

Biggest mistake ever. Yearly increases are INSANE..... These crooks know they have you by the balls. I could by two more Bulldogs every year for what they charge yearly....
