Wildly expensive. Absolutely not

Addendum: Want to make UNEQUIVOCALLY CLEAR that "Stay Tuned" below stands for the proposition that we will publicly Post Trupanion's response to our complaint. We live in an ever increasing wacky world and want to make absolutely sure message in original Posting (Quoted Below) is not misconstrued: "Contemplating doubling our Premium to $840 monthly with a Claim history of less than 1K. I have called Customer Service to complain this morning. Stay tuned."

My time over the last four years with companion of overalla positive experience. The couple of times I had to file claims it was very prompt payment. One of the negatives was usually a $20-$30 increase per year per pet, which is a lot higher than other pet insurance companies that I’ve worked with. The reason I’m leaving the two star review is because after I canceled I got a call the next day from an extremely rude trupanion lady who berated me while I was at work, while seeing patients at my medical clinic. She kept telling me that I was making a mistake by going to my Costco pet insurance and she was absolutely awful to me. I tried to kindly diffuse this situation and explained to her that people choose different insurance providers every day and that I’m just making a better choice for my life and my pets. She did not seem to understand that as she kept going, and I had to interrupt her again And explained to her that If she doesn’t need any more information for me to cancel that, I’m going to hang up with her because I’m not going to sit and listen to her condescending attitude about switching insurance providers. She then proceeded to go on about an article that I veterinarian wrote about how their insurance is superior to others. She said that there was no bias. I find that very hard to believe as this veterinarian was most likely paid to write the article for their company, which would be biased.

Bait and switch, I’ve been with Trupanion for about 3 years, had 1 claim that they didn’t cover. This year they are trying to increase my premium by 35% and when I wanted to make a change they didn’t make it and charged me when I called to get this addressed they said they called me and couldn’t do anything. Definitely shopping their competitors and dropping this horrible company!

I had a frustrating and trust-destroying experience with Trupanion due to serious issues with their payment system and app. After updating my payment details in November (due to a frozen card), I continued to receive past-due notices despite the app showing my account was up to date. A cancellation notice arrived in December, yet Trupanion still charged my card days later. When I contacted support, I was informed the app is no longer supported — a fact not disclosed anywhere within the app, leaving paying customers vulnerable to errors with sensitive information like payment details. This lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable. If the app isn’t supported, it should be removed, or at the very least, include clear messaging to warn users. This ordeal has destroyed my trust in Trupanion. I don’t feel secure relying on their services for my pets or my financial data. Until these issues are addressed, I cannot recommend them.

I waited 3 weeks to receive my dogs medical report. Followed up 3 times and finally received it after my billing date. Was told twice that it takes 7- 10 business days for it. What took forever was because they were waiting on records from a vet i told them she never visited. And their response was that perhaps it was under a different name? So, we were essentially waiting on something that does not exist. But finally the third follow up her records were given to me right away. Medical report was ridiculous. Recorded on her report that she was timid (she was a puppy and it was one of her first visits) and another visit was restlessness (it was a re-check from her spay). So, what this means is that they can decline any claims if she seems restless. It's ridiculous. I chose at the time a 1000$ deductible. Which means that for every condition that is covered, i have to pay 1000$ first before they would cover anything. Which I was completely fooled into thinking this was the best for my dog. Other insurance companies offer an annual limit, cover sick exams, cover taxes etc. FOR THE SAME MONTHLY RATE at an actual RESONABLE deductible. I used to tell friends and family good things about trupanion. Not anymore. I hear more and more people with similar experiences. Who knows if this review will reach google. Trust me when I say there is MUCH better insurance options out there.

Horrible company for cat insurance. First time I went to the vet to bring my cat, who was a stray, they told me that all her conditions were pre-existing because I can’t prove they weren’t with a previous vet record. How could I have a record for an adopted pet who was living in a bush. Basic message was, only take in cats that were bread, BEWARE OF STRAYS or SHELTER CATS. Beware of the fine print and all the exclusions. I was shocked to find that they refuse coverage for so many random reasons. They will kill you with kindness to get you signed up, but then you get the sharks once it’s time to see the vet and submit a claim. Pretty much assume you will be denied. I’d assume they are good if you never need to submit a claim for cats, but if you do they won’t pay. Plus, the customer service is terrible. When I went to cancel and express my concerns, the cancellation agent said “you are unproductive and need to spend more time reading the entire contract.” I was taken aback because I just found out my pet had a medical issue and the insurance denied the claim so I was naturally upset. Tristan, the agent, is a horrible person. I asked if they could refund my premiums for the past 4 months since they refuse to cover anything. He told me they are regulated by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC) and APIC says they can not provide refunds. So I called APIC and asked if this is true and they said “we have never heard of this.” Tristan is an interesting choice for customer service. Overall, maybe good for dogs (I can’t speak on this), but don’t buy for cats. There are better options I’m sure. But probably better off just paying out of pocket.

I appreciate the coverage and the comfort of knowing that my pet will receive optimal care if she has an emergency situation. I’m not happy about the increasing premiums, which average about $30 per year. I enrolled 3 years ago at approximately $65-$70 per month and I’ve been informed that her premium will now be $120 per month, in spite of the fact that I’ve submitted no claims.

I’m not really sure what I’m getting for the very high cost. They have been taking my money the past year without having to pay anything (my dog is about 15 months now). Yet they’ve told me my monthly is going to go up like 40%. They hooked me with the fact that supposedly your vet can submit claims directly to them, but none of the vets I’ve been to are willing to do this (despite the fact that, according to Trupanion, they have the software and capability). I’m not sure why it’s so much more expensive than other pet insurance companies. I can’t even look up the details of my dog’s coverage on my account page on their website (it shows no details). You’d think for a “high-end” pet insurance company, they could provide more. I’m disappointed we went with trupanion, and going to be getting other quotes.

how can I go from 170 to 240 to 260 in three months? Isn't the price for each pup supposed to stay the same? instead for 2 years now the prices have been going up at least ten dollars every month or so often. When will the price increases stop? i barely use my insurance.
