Trupanion - Is Trupanion’s claim calculation method kind of... off?
I recently submitted a claim to Trupanion and it seems kind of weird.
For example, let's say I claimed for $1000. The deductible is $200 and a 90% coverage rate, which means I pay 10% coinsurance.
So based on that, I thought the math would work like this:
* $1000 - $200 (deductible) = $800
* 90% of $800 = $720 → Trupanion pays
* 10% of $800 = $80 → I pay (coinsurance)
But instead, here’s how they seem to calculate it:
* 10% of $1000 = $100 → My coinsurance
* $1000 - $100 - $200(deductible) = $700 → Trupanion’s portion
This feels off to me — like they’re applying the coinsurance *before* the deductible, which doesn’t seem logical. Shouldn’t the deductible come off first, and *then* they apply the 90% coverage to the remaining amount?
Has anyone else experienced this with Trupanion? Am I misunderstanding how their calculation is supposed to work? Is all other pet insurance company calculate the claim in this way?
['Trupanion', 'Lemonade'] - Trupanion switch
I adopted bonded pair of kittens and got them on pet insurance with trupanion at 8 weeks. They just turned two and trupanion has increased my premiums by 70 % in those two years. I understand they don’t raise the premiums based on pets age, but at this rate I won’t be able to afford to insure them until they get old. Looking at switching to lemonade - my one kitty has two minor claims and my boy has none. I realize her two claims will be pre-existing but they aren’t chronic issues.
To the cat parents with lemonade- do you like it? Are you happy? I know I risk their premiums rising as well but at least I can afford more coverage with a smaller deductible to start. Would love your thoughts I want the best for my babies!! Thank you
Trupanion - Ridiculous Trupanion Rate Increases
I've had two rate increases in a year's time, increasing in total about 64%. Has calling to reduce helped anyone? This is honestly crazy, and their vague emails with arbitrary reasoning is incredibly frustrating.
September '24: $74.57 to $91.77
September '25: $91.77 to $121.58
Trupanion - Does trupanion lie about rate increases?
They advertise they never raise rates due to age. I got insurance when my dog was a puppy and in the two years ive had her the rates raised annually from $40 to $50 and now $60. It sure seems like they raise rates based on age, unless you are telling me that vet care has increaed by 50 percent in my city in the last two years.
Even in the very email they sent about the rate increase, they said "Trupanion is unique in that we never increase your monthly cost because you’ve submitted an invoice or because your pet ages. "
Trupanion - Trupanion Price increase
So I just got a 37% increase this year and this is now a 77% over two years. Based on the cost increases in my area for Vet care.
This is what they said:
We recently reviewed the data for similar pets in your area, and we found that the average cost and use of veterinary care has increased. To ensure that Geena always has access to the best veterinary care possible, we’ll be changing Geena's monthly cost from $302.79 to $413.04 starting on August 17, 2025.
Trupanion is unique in that we never increase your monthly cost because you’ve submitted an invoice or because your pet ages.
When I called them they said there are many factors that go into this cost one of them is the increased cost of vet care for an older dog. So they do not increase for cost because your dog is older but they do increase your cost because and older dog vet cost are higher.
Don't you love insurance companies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trupanion - Trupanion denied my claim and is now labeling gastritis as a pre-existing condition that they will not cover going forward. What can I do?
I’m a new cat dad — I adopted a pair of cats two weeks ago, completely unaware that they had any medical issues.
One of the cats turned out to have a fungal ear infection, a respiratory infection, and digestive issues that included diarrhea. I took them to the vet right away to get checked out. Things started to improve, but I still brought him back to the vet because of the persistent diarrhea. We made some dietary changes, and it’s getting much better, but I decided to submit a claim anyway.
Unbeknownst to me, Trupanion has a 30-day waiting period. I signed up through my State Farm agent and didn’t really read the paperwork since it was highly recommended to me.
Now, Trupanion is claiming that the cat has a pre-existing condition of gastroenteritis and that they will not cover anything related to it moving forward. I called them, frustrated, because — from what I understand — gastroenteritis is a very broad term, kind of like saying someone has an “upset stomach.” You can have an upset stomach from cancer, or from bad sushi, and those are two completely different issues.
I talked to a Trupanion rep for about 20 minutes trying to understand the situation, but they basically told me my only option is to appeal and try to get the diagnosis changed. That’s really it.
They did mention that if, in the future, a vet determines the cause of the gastroenteritis is due to a separate or unrelated condition, it might be covered — but at this point, it seems like the burden is entirely on me to prove that.
So now I’m left wondering: what’s the point of having pet insurance? I understand it’s helpful for big things, but if he ever starts vomiting blood or needs hospitalization, and they trace it back to a condition labeled as “gastritis,” will they even cover it? The rep said maybe, but I’m honestly not convinced.
Trupanion - 2 year old doodle who eats everything
I have a almost 2 year doodle whom I just spent over 7K on for sugery to remove a sock.2 days after surgery the site got infected and the sutures ripped. I’ve been looking at pet insurance reviews but it all seems so overwhelming and it feels like the good and the bad are balanced.
Currently i’m looking for a company that will pay up front which based on what i’m seeing that would be Trupanion as i’m constantly living in fear and has gotten extreme anxiety from always thinking he’s gonna swallow something again.
I’ve always swiped out my savings to practically save his life.
Any advice or help would be appreciated!!
Trupanion - Trupanion SUCKS
Their advertising is downright misleading. Your premium does not go up as your dog ages. Sure, it does not, they find other mumbo jumbo to achieve the same thing. My premium has gone up 40% over the first two years (our boy was signed up as soon as we brought him home).
Before deciding on Trupanion I did fairly extensive modeling based on real time quotes from them and their competitors. Trupanion came marginally ahead IN THE LONG TERM despite having substantially higher upfront premiums.
The price increases I have experienced make the previous analysis null and void. I am looking for an alternative. Could people. With long term experience (ideally senior dogs) comment on possible alternatives?
Thanks
Trupanion - advice/general reassurance with pre-existing conditions
hi all. i have been a silent observer of the subreddit out of curiosity due to me and my partner recently adopting a kitty. We got him on a trupanion plan via chewy pretty quickly after we got him because we thought it was the financially responsible thing to do for him.
When we got him, he had a bit of a URI and we thought it would resolve on its own. However, with no improvement being shown after having him for a little over a month we took him into the vet. Unbeknownst to us we were still within our waiting period for our insurance to kick in. We didn’t think it would be a big deal, we knew we’d have to cover this visit out-of-pocket. However, our vet noted during that visit (though unrelated to the cause of the visit) that our boy had some pretty noticeable gingivitis going on. After an extensive amount of anxiety on my end, I had my partner check in with our insurance. I had a terrible feeling about his coverage. now, after being three days short of our waiting period being over, gingivitis is now on his list of pre-existing conditions.
We pay extra for dental coverage through Trupanion and now I am absolutely spiraling that we won’t ever be able to get any of his emergency teeth concerns covered.
i was the one who pushed to take him in, i was so worried about his URI. and now i just feel incredible guilt. we insurance to make sure he would be taken care of within our means, and i feel like we failed him. all i can see is racking up dollar signs for his upcoming dental appointment we scheduled after hearing about his teeth from our vet. i don’t know if i’m looking for advice or comfort, but i just wanted to know what y’all thought.

Hello, We've had Trupanion a few years and it's an excellent product; we don't appreciate the way their representatives do business at times.
Is there another business doing coverage that pays vets directly, when going to a participating vet, for accidents? Trupanion doesn't cover wellness and that's fine.
There are some in the UK, hopefully the states catches upR
