Trupanion Canada - Dishonest and Misleading—Avoid Trupanion
We recently got a puppy, and the first owners had a one-month insurance policy with Trupanion, which we were encouraged to renew. During a routine vet visit for vaccinations, our vet noticed that our 14-week-old puppy had lower canines growing into the upper inner gums—a teething issue that had just started. When we called Trupanion, we spoke with Amanda from Sales, who assured us that this issue would be covered under the policy if we renewed. Trusting her word, we renewed the policy.
However, after our vet submitted a pre-approval for the extraction procedure, Trupanion denied the claim, stating it was a pre-existing condition. This was never raised as an issue during renewal. When we called back to contest the decision, they continued to make excuses, eventually claiming the issue was reported within 30 days of renewal and therefore ineligible.
Why are we paying such high premiums for a company that denies valid claims using vague and shifting excuses? They misled us into renewing the policy with assurances of coverage, only to leave us with no support when we needed it most.
This is especially infuriating as it concerns a young, 14-week-old puppy just starting to teethe—something no one could predict. It feels like Trupanion is exploiting pet owners, offering false assurances while denying legitimate claims under the guise of "pre-existing conditions."
New pet owners are already anxious and adjusting, and this kind of dishonesty only adds to the stress. Trupanion has shown zero care or compassion and seems more focused on collecting premiums than supporting pets or their owners.
Avoid Trupanion. They are nothing more than scammers preying on vulnerable pet owners.

Trupanion - Rejects all claims, demands appeal for all claims
Trupanion is great IF you don't use it. Now that my sweet Maltese is almost 12 and starting to have some health issues, Trupanion systematically rejects all claims, closes them out, and insists on me filing an appeal for every claim. It is maddening and no way to treat a customer who has paid them thousands of dollars in premiums. -They also falsely advertise that my particular vet can be paid directly, with no claims filed by me. My vet has never heard of this program and says they get complaints about Trupanion's false advertising all the time.
Trupanion Canada - It's a big scam, very dissappointed from the start
So far my experience has not started off on the best foot. I found out that my dog isn't even covered for illness for the first month because of a waiting period which is 30 days for illness and 5 days for accidents. I can understand there being a waiting period (although 30 days is a long time), but I should not be charged the full price for the period I'm not receiving the full benefits.
Would it not make more sense to prorate the first month or start charging as of the month your coverage actually starts? I get that the company is in this to make money, but open fraud like this is just plain dirty.
Not only are they charging me full amount that month, in addition I had to pay extra for registration fee so I can be "put in their system". Being a web developer myself, I know it costs 0 dollars to put a user in your system especially since the user did all the work for you. If you haven't figured out how to automate this by now, then that is on you and shouldn't be an extra charge on the customer.
Best explanation I got for this was because it was "the industry standard". Basically reaching into my pocket because they know I don't have a choice.
Edit, I did have another complaint here originally but they called me and they explained the issue and I removed that complaint as it was a misunderstanding on my part, so I admit to being wrong on that and I apologize. However, I do stand by what I wrote above.
I increased my rating due to them reaching out and trying to explain things, but I still don't agree with their policy on charging fully and not providing full coverage.
Update:
So a month passed and I called to ask if there is anything my dog would not be covered for him and this is where I realized this company is just one big scam.
Basically my puppy had an upset stomach due to the food he was on, so now because he vomited they are now not covering anything relating to vomiting and "licking". I mentioned to my vet that the dog likes to lick himself sometimes and she added in her notes that the dog "licks himself" so they added to their policy that anything related to licking can be not covered. WHAT???
And guess when they decide that, when you submit the claim they will decide if they feel that licking is connected to the problem you were taken to the vet for at that time. This is just hilariously bad company. I would steer clear from these guys.
Then I asked about their guarantee of money back, they will not refund my first month because I'm 3 days late. They give a "30" day money back, but they wait "33" days to tell you they won't cover your dog, so that they can keep the first month, you know that month where you were not covered to begin with? Just absolute scam.
Trupanion - They will fight tooth and nail to deny…
They will fight tooth and nail to deny coverage. I have a dog with a newly diagnosed illness who needed an endoscopy for said diagnosis. They denied covering the procedure even after filing an appeal with the help of my vet. Symptoms are NOT the same as a diagnosis and they based the denial off of symptoms. He also exhibited other, newer symptoms which prompted the $2600 procedure. Not only do I have the stress of a sick baby I am now financially in a bad place. Trupanion is greedy and will say something is pre-existing when it is not.
Enrolment was easy...price was almost 50% higher than what the commercial noise stated, but it still seemed to be OK. I did the enrolment because the cat is a registered bengal and worth a bit, plus we love her all to hell. However with any insurance two issues are important. Price increases that are hard to justify, and no coverage for a variety reasons when claims occur. How easy it is to send money for coverage isn't as important as what the coverage really is in the end, and whether or not a pet savings account is cheaper in the end. So we'll see.
Trupanion Canada - Absolute thieves
Absolute thieves. We have the top of the line plan and we are covered. We were arbitrarily denied a claim despite the vet explaining and sending over all the information. We will be contacting a lawyer to recoup all the money we’ve paid thus far. AVOID!!!!!!
Trupanion - Price went up 50% in the last 3 years
In the last 3 years they keep raising premium prices. Ours went from $90 to $170. We’re told it’s because the industry raising rates, not because our dog is getting older, but it’s hard to believe.
Trupanion - They increase your dog's monthly fee each year by an outrageous amount!
Absolutely unbelievable how much they raise the monthly fees each year. I just got an email notifying me that my monthly fee for my dog is increasing from $79.59 to $101.56, all because they found that "the average cost and use of veterinary care in my area has increased". This is insane. And the best part.. they have the nerve to write in the SAME email: "Trupanion is unique in that we never increase your monthly cost because you’ve submitted an invoice or because your pet ages." Yet, all they do is raise my monthly fee by an OUTRAGEOUS amount each year, with a pitiful excuse. DO NOT FALL FOR IT! I've put up with these unfair price increases for about 5 years now, and I've had enough.
I'm going to end my membership and take my business elsewhere. It's beyond me how they can treat their customers so poorly.

Disappointment in Your Organization’s Approach to Animal Care
Dear to whomever it concerns,
I am deeply disappointed given the fact that your organization claims to help animals and their owners.
Girly (Pet) was found on the side of the highway during the holiday travel rush. Like many, we could have ignored her, but instead, we stopped. Seeing how severe her injuries were and not knowing her chances of survival, we took her to the vet to ensure she received care.
When we learned about her fracture, we didn’t want to be selfish, so I brought her to Animal Shelter, believing they could provide the proper treatment she needed. However, upon visiting her, I was devastated to learn that due to financial constraints, the shelter was considering possibly amputating her leg rather than exploring other treatment options. That did not sit right with me, as I felt Girly deserved every chance at recovery.
On January 3rd, 2025, I made the decision to adopt her so she could receive the care she truly needed. I found an orthopedic specialist who shares my belief that amputation should only be a last resort. This veterinarian understands the true value of an animal’s life and well-being.
It breaks my heart that organizations like yours seem to prioritize finances over genuinely helping both pets and their owners. True compassion means doing what is best for the animal, not simply what is most convenient or cost-effective. I sincerely hope you reconsider your approach to animal care so that others do not have to go through a similar experience.
I was unaware of pet insurance until recently, and many individuals highly recommended your company. However, after receiving your invoice and learning that you are unable to proceed with my claim, I am deeply disappointed.
I understand that Girly’s condition was pre-existing when we found her, but I had hoped that your company would consider the unique circumstances of her situation. She was abandoned and injured when we rescued her, and we took every step to ensure she received proper care. I believed that your organization, which prides itself on supporting pet owners, would be willing to work with us to find a fair solution.
Unfortunately, given this experience, I can no longer recommend your company due to the lack of understanding and flexibility in handling cases like ours. I had expected more compassion and willingness to help from a company dedicated to animal welfare.
Sincerely,
Thalia

I appreciate you taking the time to explain Trupanion’s policy regarding pre-existing conditions.
I completely understand that insurance is designed for unexpected events and that your company must apply policies fairly to all members. However, I want to clarify that Girly was found in critical condition on the side of the highway. At the time, we had no prior history of her medical condition—we simply acted out of comp
