Pets Best - Is pet insurance worth it at this point?
I currently have Pets Best for two of my dogs. I have the more expensive package (not just for Wellness and/emergencies). I got this insurance over the summer when my vet recommended it. One of my dogs, Eve, has pretty bad dental disease and will more than likely need dentals every 1-2 years. Pets Best denied everything related to her dental due to it being a pre-existing condition. Fine, I guess, although I was hoping they would at least cover her pre-surgery blood panel. While she was under, she also had X-rays done of her hips to check for hip dysplasia due to some gait issues. They also denied that as a pre-existing condition. Okay... My other dog, Cora, is currently being worked up for something. She has a dexamethasone test to rule out Cushings. This test was also denied as a pre-existing condition.
Here are my questions
1. Should I try to argue with them to cover any portion of these things for my dogs? Is it even worth it?
2. Is there another insurance company who is a bit better?
3. Or should I forget pet insurance and just use the cost of the premium and put it in a separate savings account for my pets health specifically?
I should add - I expected to pay for Eve’s dental. I know dental disease is rarely covered under insurance. My vet and I were hoping they would at least cover some blood work and the hip X-rays
Update: I just called and canceled my policy with Pets Best. The customer service rep was actually really sorry when I explained the situation. She even got me a refund for the remainder of the month that I already paid for. I’ve decided to just setup another savings account which I will pay monthly into to save for my vet bills.
Trupanion - Trupanion monthly premium increased 46%, still worth it? (healthy 6yo cat in Washington, DC)
I have had Trupanion insurance for my 6yo cat Eloise since I got her as a kitten. The premiums have increased each year, which is to be expected, but I just got the new 2025 policy and it increased from $28.95 to $42.31. What?!
Eloise is healthy other than gingivitis. She had to have a dental cleaning this year and Trupanion actually covered part of it, even though the way the policy is written made it seem like they wouldn't. I submitted it anyway and most if it was accepted. I only got a little back after deductible but considered that a win. Hopefully she won't need another cleaning for a few years.
I'm not paying $42 a month so my question is, is insurance really needed for a health cat? And if so, any recommendations?
I didn't have insurance for my two prior cats (it wasn't so much a thing when I got them way back). One of them was mostly healthy for 15 years then the last 6 months of his life it was one expensive crisis after another. After he died and I got Eloise, her vet strongly encouraged insurance. I did the math and what I would have paid in 15 years of premiums was almost exactly what I paid in 6 months of those medical problems. It would have been nice to get a % back after deductible during such a stressful time. So that is what swayed me to get insurance for Eloise. $20 then $25 then $28 seemed reasonable. But $42 does not. [Especially when Trupanion CEO has a compensation package of almost a million dollars.](https://simplywall.st/stocks/us/insurance/nasdaq-trup/trupanion/management#:~:text=Trupanion's%20CEO%20is%20Margi%20Tooth,company's%20shares%2C%20worth%20%245.14M)
Her current policy:
Max lifetime benefits: no limits
Deductible per illness/injury: $500
Co-insurance: 90%/10%
Waiting period accident: 5 days
Waiting period illness: 30 days
Thanks for any insight!
Nationwide - I’m overwhelmed, help!
I’ve been looking for pet insurance and I’m so overwhelmed. I need help!
I was looking at nationwide since it looked affordable but then I read awful things. I’m hoping someone can give me some recommendations!
I live in Illinois.
8 year old Pomeranian, she had luxating patella (not sure how it’s spelled, but where her knee pops out of place).
7 almost 8 year old dachshund. He doesn’t have any pre-existing conditions!
Edit: THANK YOU for all the responses!
Trupanion - Pet Insurance - Canada
Hello, I just found this sub.
I am looking at getting pet insurance.
I have a 3 month old cavapoo.
I was going to go with fetch until I saw all these horror stories.
I am in Canada. Any suggestions?
I got quoted $108 with trupanion. Seems high. Fetch was like $60 with the wellness.
I notice they all jack up premiums based on whatever yearly too. Even if trupanion says it's not based on age, they can blame it on whatever. I asked them and they said they're is not cap on how much premiums can increase.
I understand it's a gamble. Might never need it but I want the piece of mind of having coverage.
Trupanion - Is $106/month Too Much for Cat Insurance in Canada?
Hi everyone! I'm looking for some insights on my cat's insurance costs. I've been with Trupanion since my cat was 3 years old, and she is now 7. The premium has been increasing nearly every year, and I'm currently paying $106 per month with 90% coverage and a $0 deductible.
She's been relatively healthy overall, just dealing with early-stage osteoporosis, which we're managing with weight loss. Thankfully, no other major health issues. However, the one time I submitted a claim, my vet had to intervene because Trupanion was reluctant to cover costs that were supposedly included under my plan.
Given these details, does the price I'm paying seem reasonable? Also, if anyone has suggestions for more affordable insurance options in Canada that still offer reliable coverage, I’d love to hear about them. Thanks for your help!
Progressive - Progressive added someone i don't know
Hello I 31f bought my car 2 years ago and got progressive insurance. I signed up for paperless and honestly I don't go on my policy and look. My insurance increased even though i never changed anything. I look and see they added somebody I don't even know who lives where I used to live. I asked why they did that and I was told my info was sold to a 3rd party and through that information they added her. I never got a notice or gave my permission. Has anybody else gone through that?
Nationwide - Pet insurance
So…I’ve had Nationwide for my Yorkie since I got him. For five years. They paid 90% which I think is exceptional. In fact, they’ve stopped that practice! He’s had pancreatitis twice, allergies and other expensive issues. Today I received a notice I was being cancelled. I feared it as the bills have been very high. My question is…Now What?? What recommendations do you have? Will a new company accept pre existing conditions? Who pays out the best and the fastest? I appreciate all thoughts! TIA
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois - Insurance "discounts applied" but hospital still billing me for the total amount?
I was charged $2500 for an ultrasound required for my high risk pregnancy.
My insurance provider (BCBS of IL) states that that my portion owed is $0, due to "**Discounts Applied -** Your BCBSIL plan has negotiated cost savings for you with your provider. You may still need to pay part of the bill. Check Details of Services for details of what you may owe."
Under details of services, everything states I am responsible for $0.
There is no copy of the EOB for this charge - every time I look it says it is "not available at this time."
In the meantime I have received a bill from the in-network hospital, stating I am responsible for the full $2500 because my insurance did not cover it.
I actually have 3 similar bills just like this, but only including one for simplicity of questions asked.
I plan to call my BCBSIL tomorrow, but what are some questions I should ask here? Should I be verifying my cost owed is $0 and then having them contact the hospital directly to refute the bill? Or do I need to contact the hospital directly? Or is there a chance I am actually responsible here? I haven't seen this "discounts applied" verbiage before, so I am a little confused.
Spot - Looking for pet insurance
My cat is getting up there in age so now I'm trying to find a good pet insurance for her. I'm mainly looking for one that would also cover dental. I've been looking at Spot, but lots of people have said it's a scam, and from what I've heard AKC insurance doesn't cover dental.
Figo - Figo renewal going up 40% this year?
Is anybody else's Figo insurance going up 40% in 2025? My rate is going from $425/yr to $700/yr. I reached out to Figo and they blamed inflation of all things, saying nothing could be done about the price. I was told Figo was one of the better companies by all my pet owner friends & family, but they have never covered a claim and at these rates it would be cheaper for me to just put aside $50/mo. Really frustrated and looking for advice.
