Trupanion - Scam - pay less than 30% of claims
This company is completely untrustworthy. I paid in for 12 years and the first time I had a claim they paid less than 30% of my claim - with a policy that is supposed to pay 90%. When you take your dog in on an emergency basis they do not pay for "examination" to determine what is wrong with your dog. I was told twice that acupuncture treatment (to control inflammation from IVDD) would be paid for, only to have these claims denied. The premiums go up every year - now over $175 a month for ridiculous claim policies. They are a terrible, terrible company. Save your money and use foregone premiums to pay for treatment yourself - you will save money. When I first started with them, my premium was around $35 a month - now it is $175 a month. A 500% increase in 12 years. Supposedly this is based on inflation, not my dog's age. Inflation over 12 years has not been 500%. I am ashamed that I was taken in by this company.
Trupanion - Responsive customer service, lousy rates & deductibles
Customer service was very friendly and responsive. I signed up for a policy for my dog, but ended up canceling it in the 30-day guarantee window. I decided that the starting premiums were far too high, considering I know they will be going up over her life. In a couple years, I would not be able to keep her on the policy after some increases in premiums... and by then, my girl will likely have pre-existing conditions so switching to any other company would be useless.
Also, I had to choose a $1k deductible just to afford it, and I felt like the policy would never be helpful, unless my girl ends up with a condition for the rest of her life. But if she has multiple accidents or illnesses from which she recovers, I will have lots of deductibles I have to meet at $1,000 each. The per accident/per condition deductible felt like it would end up costing me far more than a policy that has an annual deductible, and a deductible that is much lower, since the rates are ones I will be able to afford.
So I chose a different company. My premiums are almost half of Trupanions and my deductible is $250 per year for an unlimited payout at 90% after I meet the deductible each year. Oh, and the one I switched to covers exam fees. If you have to go to an emergency room, that can be anywhere from $125 to $250 just for the examination fee.
I appreciate Trupanion's 24/7 customer service. Unfortunately the bottom line is I can barely afford their starting premiums, I flat out cannot afford the premiums with the deductibles I really need, and in a few years when my girl really needs insurance, I fear their rates would be one where I would be forced to drop her insurance. They stress repeatedly that they are the only company where rates are not increased because of your pet's age. Beware: this does not mean their rates do not increase. I have seen review after review of exorbitant increases in rates.
Also note that, while they boasted of being the only company that uses direct pay (not actually true, btw... the company I chose has a similar process where I don't have to pay up front if my vet hospital is willing to submit the paperwork and wait for payment), if your vet does not participate in direct pay, you still have to pay up front. My vet does not participate in Trupanion's direct pay system... nor do most vet offices that I spoke to in my area. I found one ER that does, otherwise I found none.
Trupanion Canada - Coverage for anaphylaxis deemed preventative care
Our dog was anaphylactic (swollen face, difficulty breathing) to vaccines since she was a puppy. Her vet recommended that she is given pre-treatment with her vaccines to keep her safe.
She had her annual vaccines just recently
Recently I was told by Trupanion that since this was a pre-treatment, it was PREVENTATIVE CARE and thus not covered. However if she suffered an allergic reaction and then we bring her in then it is a covered condition.
Individuals with a known peanut allergy who take an epi-pen after peanut ingestion is not preventative care, it's treating an exposure to a known trigger.
A dog with a known vaccine allergy who take medication due to expected vaccine exposure is not preventative care, it's treating an exposure to a known (and necessary) trigger.
I am very disappointed in trupanion's position that she needs to suffer with potentially deadly consequences in order for something like this to be covered when she was exposed to something she is known to be allergic to!
I don't think this is how a company who says that they are "dedicated to helping dogs and cats get the best care" should operate.
Trupanion - I have been with Trupanion for 9 years…
I have been with Trupanion for 9 years for 3 English Bulldogs. Last year appears they have gone automated for approval - and it is a nightmare!! I had to call 3 times b/c denied 3 times for meds that have been covered and deductible of $1000 met for many years!! I was told it is the automated system making the mistake. Therefore, we will remove you from the auatomated approval system. However, they did not remove b/c some problem AGAIN when I submitted second invoice for a dif med - denied when deductible met and have been reimbursing me for years for this med. Constantly on the PHONE with inept employees. They are too lazy to look at past history and SEE the meds have been covered for YEARS and deductible MET!! Turpanion has failed at customer service for past two years and I do not see it changing. Ironically, first sentence on denial email stated "YOU have met your $1000 deductible" then the invoice was denied stating NOT met deductible! IDIOTS!!! Very dissatisfied customer! Use TRUPANION if you want to stay on phone constantly to get approved for their ineptness and you have lots of TIME to waste.
Trupanion - We purchased our French mastif 3 1/2…
We purchased our French mastif 3 1/2 yrs ago. We called Trupanion and took out a policy for 123 a month, a few years later it went up to 133 a month, we just got a notice that this month will be 167 a month. We’ve never filed a claim and she’s almost 4 yrs old. We were told when we took out the policy that it would never increase the amount. Hopefully my dog will stay healthy, but there are thousands of dollars invested with no return. Not sure about this pet insurance!
Trupanion - Coverage for Boxer dogs is a complete…
Coverage for Boxer dogs is a complete scam. $163/mo is absolutely crazy! This is more than double what others in my area and paying for different breeds. They are making it impossible for pet owners to do what is in their dog's best interest. $23K for insurance throughout my dog's life?! Just awful
Trupanion - Trupanion failed badly
First claim after one year as a new client. We claimed a Cardiology consult due to a cough. Pet had never had any known
cardiac issues. However, buried in her many years of records was a single one time remark about a mild arrhythmia during dental anesthesia. Trupanion used this to deny us a claim. This was never mentioned in their Medical Evaluation they do in your first month with them.
Honestly they must have used AI to find such a tiny detail in 11years of records.
Fought them for a month on this. Even had the Vets send in statements saying this can be absolutely normal and not what they were trying to say. Trupanion stuck to their guns. So we quit them. No need to keep paying them a premium for nothing.
Ended up, what they used to deny our claim wasn't even the issue. Learned our pet had cancer completely unrelated to anything cardiac. So their argument wasn't even relevant. They were so closed minded and they look for ANY reason not to cover. First and last experience with this useless company. I do not like being ripped off after being blindsided by a detail not included or mentioned in their initial 30 day medical evaluation. We had Pet Plan 10
Years before them with zero issues until they raised rates on us after being bought out.
Stay away from these folks unless you start with a perfectly healthy newborn pup. They do everything they can to “connect one thing to another” and deny deny deny, accurate or not. And they mislead you with their new member Medical Evaluation. Terrible. Do not trust them.

Pyometra should be covered. Will be canceling services.
Trupanion - 1/5 Stars
1/5 Stars - Misleading Sales Practices and Lack of Transparency
I recently had the misfortune of dealing with Trupanion, a pet insurance company that promises comprehensive coverage but fails to deliver. My experience was marred by misleading sales practices, lack of transparency, and poor customer service.
When I signed up for the policy, the agent assured me that I would have a single $1,000 deductible. However, I later discovered that the deductible was applicable to each condition, not just once. This was a significant difference that would have affected my decision to purchase the policy.
Furthermore, the documents provided to me did not match the policy's actual terms, leaving me feeling deceived and frustrated. When I brought this to the attention of the company, I was met with a lack of empathy and understanding.
Trupanion's business practices are not transparent, and their sales agents are not forthcoming with accurate information. As a pet owner, it's essential to have trust in the insurance company, and Trupanion has failed to establish that trust.
I would not recommend Trupanion to anyone looking for pet insurance. Instead, I would suggest exploring other options that prioritize transparency, honesty, and customer satisfaction.
