I am very disappointed and concerned with Trupanion's service as of late. Especially if pet parents are relying on their help and services for the well-being of their animal...
Last year when I adopted a purebred cat, I was provided with a code from the breeder for a free 30 day policy. I had no problem activating it and the agent was very great! My only issue at that moment was they had told me I would be called back at the end of my 30 day trial, but was never called. I had therefore decided not to pursue a payed insurance with them.
I have now adopted a new cat from the same breeder and had another 30 day free trial. I tried calling the first time the night of the adoption and had to leave a message since no one could take my call. I waited 2 days for them to call me back. Nothing. I decided to call back on the 3rd day. I was then told that because I waited, I may not be able to benefit from my 30 day trial. I was also told I would be called back by a supervisor either tuesday or wednesday of this week. We are now thursday and I have not been called back...
I am glad that this was not for an ACTUAL HEALTH ISSUE with one of my animals and that I am not an actual paying client. But unfortunately, this experience was enough to convince me not to insure my pets with Trupanion.
Trupanion - Was able to use Trupanian while…
Was able to use Trupanian while checking out at the vet office. Like how fast the process went. I was disappointed that one pays around $40+/month for the pet insurance, and for the vet visit, Trupanion only paid around $60.
Trupanion Canada - Trupanion is a very dishonest company
Trupanion is a very dishonest company. After having their insurance for a few years they will increase the rates signifagantly more then they any of their sales material advertises. They justify this by using statistics that are beneficail to their claim while ignoring their own published finacial numbers. For example, they claim vet costs are up 65% in the emails they send notifying informaing a customer of the increase while their published finacials state the increases were closer to 35%. Our last increase was 15% on top of a 30% increase a couple of years ago. If you call in and questions what going on you are met with passive agressive people saying their "sorry you fell that way" rather then addressing the actual issue. We are 7 years in and they know its cost probiative to leave so they gouge customers playing on their concerns for their pets health. This company is morally bankrupt and should be avoided at all costs. Use at your own peril.
Trupanion - Raised my rates almost immediately
I would give a higher rating but it seemed like as soon as I had a couple of claims my rates were raised. Twice! They're almost double what they were to start and my dog is only 2 years old.
Trupanion - 90/10 policy not really 90/10
I jave a 90/10 policy but the first time I ever had to use this for an emergency out of my 636 dollar vet bill I had to pay 432. Thought it would be lower. The only good thing I can say is my vet uses Trupanion and th bill was paid at the vet right after release of my dog. That part was easy
Trupanion - Would rather train my pets to do taxes than deal with them again.
They raised my premium, upped my deductible, and paid out less — it’s like the reverse lottery! Two pets, two useless claims. I pay them monthly so they can politely decline to help. 10/10 regret. Would rather train my pets to do taxes than deal with them again.
Trupanion Canada - Trupanion is not longer the company they used to be!Do NOT use this company
Do NOT use this company. Once a great company, no longer! We have had insurance with them for over 12 years and our dog was diagnosed with periodontal disease years ago and they said, no worries they will never use a diagnosis to increase your rates or not cover you in the future BUT guess what, now that she needs surgery they will not cover her costs of between $4k-6K (don't even get me started on the Vet pricing) because we did not have her teeth cleaning completed within 3 months of her pet visit. Had no idea, I advised them that our Vet left the practice and we just found another so missed out by 4 months. Does not matter, what the circumstances are, sorry!
Take your money, put it aside and forget about using Trupanion! So disappointed and to those who say, oh we have had no issues, either did we! Wait for it!
Trupanion Canada - Signed up hoping to get some…
Signed up hoping to get some reassurance that my pets would be healthy and taking care of with Trupanion.I was wrong I got five emails asking for the same information each time then I get met with rude agents that barely give ya the time of day horrible company.Canceling soon and looking for a good pet insurance provider cause trupanion ain't it
Trupanion - I have emailed time after time to have…
I have emailed time after time to have a dog dropped from my policy that is no longer my dog and they refuse to drop the dog and keep billing. I called and they said I had to email in writing. When I email they say I am emailing from the wrong email address and that is impossible and the eamil address they send billing, notices and emails to review them. Originally in 2020 they were great and easy to deal with when a dog had an injury. Since then they deny claims when they should not. And keep billing for a dog I have not had for over two years now. I should only be paying for 2 dogs not 3 so I have reently hired a lawyer and notified the insurance commission in Texas of the problem and their unwillingness to resolve.
Well, here it is July 3 and we have still not heard from Trupanion even though they indicated they would review and reach out. Par for course.
Trupanion - Refusal to right THEIR mistake.
For the past three years, I’ve recommended Trupanion to every pet owner I know. Unfortunately, that will no longer be the case.
It’s become clear to me that Trupanion relies on the fact that customers feel stuck once enrolled — knowing that switching providers means losing coverage for any existing conditions. Because of this, they don’t seem to take customer concerns seriously. As a business owner myself, I believe in doing what’s right when a mistake is made, and I’ve never taken advantage of a situation. Sadly, I can’t say the same for this company.
Trupanion boasts a “98% continuous enrollment” rate, but this is misleading. That number doesn’t reflect satisfaction — it reflects the fact that most pet owners can’t risk switching insurers. Once you’re in, any issues you’ve faced with your pet become preexisting elsewhere, leaving customers feeling trapped rather than loyal.
When I signed up, I was never informed that coverage for behavioral issues, like anxiety, required an add-on. Our representative listed what wasn’t included in our plan — anxiety was not mentioned. Now, three years later, my dog has been diagnosed with anxiety traits, and I was shocked to learn we’re not covered.
Even worse, a Trupanion manager admitted on a recorded call that our representative failed to mention this important detail. And yet, they still refused to offer us the behavioral add-on — which is only around $5/month — despite it being their oversight. We absolutely would have chosen it had we known.
It’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing. You expect better from a company you’ve trusted with your beloved pet’s health — especially given the premiums we’ve paid over the years. Instead of righting a wrong, they hid behind policy.
Because of this, I can no longer in good conscience recommend Trupanion. We’ll be looking elsewhere for future coverage — even if it means paying premiums upfront. As French Bulldog owners, we’re constantly asked about pet insurance, and we used to be Trupanion’s biggest cheerleaders. Not anymore.
Very upset and very let down.
***EDIT TO ADD SINCE I CANT RESPOND TO A REPLY—
Cold, scripted responses do not make your customers feel valued.
Simply repeating what was said over the phone does nothing to resolve the issue or take ownership of the situation. We chose to call in rather than apply online specifically to ensure we had all the necessary information before signing up. Your representative’s failure to mention a key detail about an add-on service is a clear lapse on your end.
No one expects to comb through lengthy testimonials or fine print when speaking directly with a trained representative. Relying on the excuse that we “should have read the fine print” is a complete cop-out.
Please don’t claim our concerns are important to you when your reply is clearly a copy-and-paste response with no genuine effort toward resolution. There would be no point to reach out on the matter further as Trupanion doesn’t offer any resolve
