Trupanion - Okay experience
I submitted my invoice via Trupanion. I waited for a response and when I finally got one it was that my claim was denied. When I spoke to a rep via phone I was told my documents were never received and the documents were received were completely dark. I submitted the invoice thought the clinic and was instantly approved. The other problem I have was the total was 1,930. My deductible is $800 and you all are paying 900. I was never told why the additional amount was covered and when I called I was told it was the exam charge. When I told the exam was waived and indicated in the final invoice I was given the run around. While I’m grateful trupanion paid some money. It doe feel like I was treated like a number. I would have an appreciated someone calling me to tell me what was missing or what was approved and what was denied and why.
Trupanion Canada - Advertised instant coverage then denied
I’m disappointed that I was told my pet was able to get instant coverage if I signed up in the office. I took the offer. At the conclusion of the office visit I submitted a claim to see how it would work. I was instantly denied because coverage just started that day. That is misleading and false advertising. Now on top of that, if I decide to continue with this insurance the condition I took my dog in for would be considered “pre-existing” and she’ll never be covered for it. Turned me right off. I was going to continue after the 30 days free but you lost my trust immediately. No thanks.
Trupanion - CUSTOMER INSATISFACTION 2
1-YOUR PLAN IS NOT ACCEPTED AS A PAYMENT OPTION WHEN CHECKING OUT AT THE,VETERINARIAN.
2.TAKES TOO MUCH TIME , 3-5 DAYS , IN APPROVE A REIMBURSEMENT. WE ARE IN THE XXI CENTURY .
3- TRUPANION DID NOT COVER THE ENTIRE INVOICE, TOO MANY DEDUCTIONS IN A SMALL INVOICE.
4 WHEN YOU JOIN A PET HEALTH PLAN, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A HIGH STANDARD SATISFACTION COVERAGE.
IT MAKE NOSENCE TO .PAY A MONTHLY FEE FOR A COVERAGE THAT ONLY COVER A FRACTION OF THE COSTS. IT MAKE MORE SENCE TO OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT FOR THE PET EXPENSES AND DEPOSIT THE MONTHLY FEE ,,,
I HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR THE CHEM - PHARMA INDUSTRY FOR OVER 40 YEARS AND I KNOW WHAT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SERVICE IS, AND WHAT CLIENTS ESPECT FROM US.
ITS Frustrating THAT YOU SPEND OVER A WEEK LOOKING INTO EACH INVOICE JUST TO SHORT PAY IT.
We espect a more complete coverage and support,
If you need to increase the cost of your coverage just to cover full invoices , that could be acceptable, but having a “short payment coverage” is not what pet lovers are looking for,,,
Trupanion Canada - Member for 15 years
I've been a Trupanion member for 15 years. The coverage plan is straight forward and I had very few issues over the first decade. However, the steep rate increases over the past three years have been alarming. The justification for the inflated rates no longer lines up with rational thought and it feels like the loyal client base is now being taken advantage of, not being able to switch providers if pets have developed pre-existing conditions.
Hopefully a more competitive insurance provider steps into the market to help correct the issue.
Update: I've already spoken to representatives about my rising rates (64% increase in just two years, to be precise) and was given the same fabricated reply about the rising costs of veterinary care (and as someone who works in the industry, the inflated rates and their trajectory don't trend in a way that coincides with the prices). I'm not interested in hearing the same regurgitation, or the messaging around being committed to the care of my pets. I would be interested to see the trend of clients who have cancelled coverage over the past few years because your commitment to their pets has put such a strain on their finances... which is something Trupanion used to pride itself in avoiding.
Trupanion - Expensive
Expensive. Got rid of app. Vet doesn't want to take the time to submit claims.
Trupanion - Trupanion will insure you… until they don’t
Trupanion will insure you… until they find any excuse not to.
They’ll use any past abnormality — no matter how small — to deny future claims.
It doesn’t need to be related. It just needs to exist
Trupanion - ***STAY AWAY*** DO NOT PURCHASE A TRUPANION POLICY
I adopted a puppy in May and brought him to his adopted puppy exam 5 days later. At the puppy's first pet visit at checkout, I was advised to set up a pet insurance policy so to cover any sick conditions. On that pet exam report, vet notated bumps on his paws and wrote a prescription for medicated shampoo as a preventative measure. 4 hours after the vet visit but still on the same day, I enrolled and paid for a Trupanion policy as there was an incentive to waive the 30-day waiting period. I uploaded my invoice as requested.
Trupanion has denied the claim b/c it is deeming the skin bumps a "pre-existing condition". Since the report noted that I noticed bumps on his leg one day prior to the exam, Trupanion is relying on my statement as pre-existing condition. I'm not a licensed vet so in short, what Trupanion is telling dog owners is that any noted observations to the vet will be deemed as a pre-existing condition, and therefore all future claims will be denied.
Initially I was spreading the word how excited I was to find a pet insurance policy that pays a lifetime deductible rather than an annual deductible. After my experience this afternoon, I am reaching out to my dog park friends advising them of my Trupanion experience and to stay away from Trupanion.
Trupanion Canada - Premium rise 70% in 2.25 years
I have had my two dogs with Trupanion for several years. In the last 2 yrs my premiums have increased overall by just shy of 70%! Based on my most recent claims experience, I will be cancelling my policies at the end of this month. I have a $200 deductible and 90% coverage and in the few (2) claims I have needed they have fallen short of my expectations. Most recent claim for cracked teeth requiring extraction estimated at $2000, of which Trupanion only will cover $900. Trupanion does not make my policy document available to read via mobile website and SURPRISE! they won’t cover all of the anesthesiology scope (only half) because the Vet included a cleaning in the estimate scope. Buried in the vague, generalist info the policy says you may be prorated for certain scope. So, now, based on the principle of the situation, I have spoken to my Vet and she is quite surprised and is willing to remove the cleaning (Tooth prophylaxis, polishing and fluoride). This is the only way Trupanion will pay the full $638 for the anesthesiology in full. I have spoken to multiple managers (Boomer (yes, that’s actually his name! And Aaron) to no avail. These managers consistently tell you your only recourse is to increase your deductible so you’ll pay less per month. This would just shift the risk back to me. I have pleaded with them to embrace a culture of customer SATISFACTION in their business model. There is no interest in measuring, nor following up on customer satisfaction in any instance. Annually, I receive and email outlining the consistent increase in my policies stating that although my dog will not be discriminated by age or claim volume. One minor claim prior. Apparently my postal code region in rural Nova Scotia is a hotbed of Vet price increases (although my bills for wellness have shown otherwise) and there are many “unlucky” pets out here who are subsidizing the costs of “lucky” pets. This is their explanation: my dog is “unlucky”, yet there have only been now 2 claims in more than 8 years with a 70% increase in premium. Do yourself a favour - take the advice of Consumer Reports. There isn’t a single pet insurance company they will recommend. Not one! I’m putting my $140 every month from now on in a tax free savings account. I encourage you to look at Trupanion’s company balance sheet to see where they stand: Q1 2025 - operating at a loss. Q2 likely the same (Aug 7th earnings call). Company CEO and COO are selling their company shares a lot this year - CEO Margaret Tooth sold ~15000 shares alone! She seems to be anticipating a drop in share price with Q2 earnings announcement. Wait and see and steer clear of this stagnating company.
Update (31 July 25):
I continue to call (daily) Trupanion in the interest of speaking to senior management. Today, I talked to Chandra from customer service and like the three other days I have called, I have requested to speak to a senior manager about my situation and advocate for others in a similar situation.
Trupanion - Costly Poor Coverage
I cannot say enough negative about Trupanion. They will find any excuse not to pay a claim (and I don't make many). Dog had an ear infection and they refused to pay because they said that he had a prior record of allergies. Putting aside that the allergies to which they refer turned out to be a behavioral issue and not allergies the doctor said this was no an allergy. On medicine if I buy it CHEAPER from the doctor's online pharmacy they will not pay the shipping charge which when combined with the costs of the medicine is less than buyi9ng it from the office. Yet they prefer to pay the higher amount. They blame the DVM for their slow processing of claims.
I was with Pet Plan for 10 years and they were flawless but they no longer are seemingly around. I have to imagine that most of the other underwriters are better than Trupanion. Steer clear of Trupanion.
Trupanion - Trupanion self diagnosed my dog with a nonexistent condition
If I could have given a zero I would have. I have never done pet insurance in the past so I was willing but skeptical to try the 30day trial from trupanion offered through my vet. My dog is 6months old and in perfect health. In my first visit with my vet, I mentioned to the vet tech I would like the vet to take a look at his skin and ensure there were no allergies or illnesses of any concern since he scratches more often than my previous pup did. My vet gave him the all clear with no issues or concerns whatsoever. Upon his 2nd visit 2 weeks later for another round of vaccines the vet notice he had the start of an ear infection, giving him medication and ultimately submitting the claim to trupanion. I received an email notifying me the claim was denied due to "a preexisting condition". When I contacted trupanion they stated that the vet tech records stated my concern of itching and therefore my dog has allergies which is preexisting to the insurance. I informed them he has not been diagnosed with any kind of allergies and an inquiry to my vet shouldn't allow them to self diagnose my dog with an illness they feel he has. I informed my vet regarding the issue and they created an addendum stating my dog had no allergies nor any signs of allergies and he is in perfect health. They than recommended I appeal the decision. I spoke with a new agent who stated they don't accept addendums. She also stated they don't diagnose diseases or illness. Seeing how my vet never diagnosed nor mentioned the possibility of allergies to me or in his notes, trupanion took it upon themselves to label him as having allergies to get out of paying anything that can "fall under the umbrella of allergies". This seems to do with anything that can cause a dog to have an itch. I am grateful this occurred during the 30 days trial, but am very discouraged from pet insurance as a whole.
