Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws Preys on Senior Pets with Outrageous Rate Hikes
I have been a loyal customer since 2018, but recently Healthy Paws increase in my monthly premium from $124 to $346 a month for a single pet, which is unacceptable. For a healthy 13-year-old senior pet, the nearly threefold jump feels punitive, particularly when finding alternative coverage at this age is next to impossible.
What makes this even more disappointing is the clear contradiction between Healthy Paws actions and their stated values. On their website, they claim:
• “First and foremost, we’re pet-lovers. Everything we do is driven by our love of animals and our commitment to pet health.”
• “Our compassion for animals… drives us to offer the best product and an extraordinary caliber of service.”
• “Pet Insurance plans to protect your pet and your finances.”
Yet raising premiums to such an outrageous level for loyal, long-term customers demonstrates the opposite of compassion and care. Instead of protecting pets and easing financial stress, adjusting my policy premium to $342 a month for one pet does the exact opposite.
As someone who works in the pet care industry and spends every day in veterinary hospitals, I have recommended Healthy Paws to countless families over the years. Sadly, I can no longer do so in good conscience. This experience has completely eroded my trust in their company and what they claim to stand for.
MetLife - delay and frustration
There is a lot of delay and frustration with the reimbursement process. Either my vet who submits my claims or me are constantly having to provide the same information over and over again. It is really nitpicking it seems sometimes. For example, an invoice that showed the amount due, the payment, and then there was an additional line item showing that satisfying the balance, and then a zero due line. That got pushed back at least two times with the reason being it didn’t show payment.
MetLife - Overall good, but definitely room for improvement
Overall MetLife is pretty good for pet insurance, however after the first year they hiked my monthly price up by over $30/month which seems astronomical. I’m terrified to see what next year will be, and whether or not it’s something I’ll still be able to afford. Claims sometimes take quite a while to be processed. Additionally, they don’t cover PT unless performed by a licensed vet, which is kind of a fine print thing. I was unable to find a dog PT in the state of CT who was a licensed vet. They are all licensed physical therapists or rehab specialists, but don’t have a DVM. Pretty disappointing since this was one of the main perks to me, having coverage for something very common, but costly and repetitive, that comes up, especially with larger dogs.
Pets Best - Horrible Insurance Company
Should have known all insurance companies are scams! WHETHER it BE HUMAN OR PET! They are all scams! I got denied because it wasn't deemed an urgent!!!
Fetch Canada - fetch denied all our claims for a foot…
fetch denied all our claims for a foot infection and claimed it was a pre existing condition. even after the vet wrote a letter stating it was not pre-existing and we provided a full 2 years of medical history they denied our claims. our cat died from the infection. never use this terrible company
Trupanion - They are a total scam
They are a total scam. If you love your dog, run away from them.
I'm still waiting for a claim and a refund, one month later.
I had them because of Chewy, but when I sent my dogs claims for the first time, they would disappear from the website, I emailed them, and they said they had nothing. I took print screens, and they said they would do it by email. After that, they said my first dog had an ear infection because he made a test to see if he had something, and because he had had it in the past, they would not cover it. But he didn't have any, they just didn't want to cover the diagnostic test. And this guy Ali would insist that my dog had an infection, this representative is the most lying, rude person, I do think the guy has even issues against clients or me. I canceled the service with them, and after I canceled they charged me. I sent an email, and the guy said they didn't refund me yet because now there is an error in the system, and they put my cancellation date wrong. Hilarious. Now I'm still waiting for my refund and my claim...
Worst customer support, worst experience ever.
Embrace - Not worth the money or the hassle.
Embrace sounds good until you pay and learn that nearly every vet visit is not covered. There were multiple occasions where I was told by Embrace that they needed medical records to review a submitted claim. They would request that I contact my clinic. I would contact my clinic only to learn that my clinic had already responded to the original ask for embrace. This felt like a racket and was definitely a waste of my time.
In the end, I spent more money on Embrace covering two 9 year-old dogs, then just simply paying the bills myself. Not worth the money or the hassle.
Nationwide - The website is too difficult
The website is too difficult. You asked me at the start what my HOME zip code is. Then at the end when I wanted to purchase, you asked me my BILLING address, but I couldn't edit the ZIP code and I had to hit back, back, back all the way to the start to change the Zip code to my billing Zip code. They should have an option on the check-out page to change the billing zip code.
Healthy Paws - Sadly gone WAY downhill
Sadly, Healthy Paws has gone WAY downhill. I've been with the company for about 12 years and they have always paid out for my cat, and paid out quickly so that is what gets the three stars but EVERYTHING else gets a zero star.
Let's start with premiums—they go up over 100% a year. I started out paying about $20 a month and now am at about $100 a month for an indoor cat.
They moved their customer service abroad somewhere so now it is TERRIBLE. One of the things I loved about the company was its well-spoken, knowledgeable service reps. Now it is people you can hardly understand, who are in a loud room with tons of other people, and they read off scripts. They also just hang up on you if you ask anything at all that is slightly complicated. You will also wait on the phone interminably and listen to extremely LOUD rock music. Take the day off work so you can deal with any Healthy Paws calls. They do not have a chat and you can email them but they just don't answer emails. AWFUL.
The website. You can't "add a pet." The button is there but if you try to do it, you're told you need to start a new account from a new email. Why? Who knows.
You can't upload photos of your pet. Again, the button is there but if you try to do it, nothing happens. This has been the last two cats I've tried to add pictures for.
It also put in an incorrect address into the system for some reason, yet they refuse to allow you to correct it for a month. Bizarro "reasons" will follow.
I used to recommend the company to everyone as I rescue and adopt out cats but won't be anymore.
MetLife - It’s a little difficult/confusing to…
It’s a little difficult/confusing to submit documents and I’m constantly receiving alerts that more documents are needed with not much of visibility into why the documents I already provided are not enough.
