Trupanion Canada - I booked an appointment to have my dog…
I booked an appointment to have my dog spayed. After reading the documentations I decided to get pet insurance in case anything should happen during surgery. The next day I got pet insurance with Trupanion and they had no issues taking $200 from me immediately. That night Around 8 PM my dog got the Zumiez and kept running back-and-forth jumping on and off the couch and her kneecap Dislocated and popped out of place. This Caused laxatated Patela and is classified as accidental. However after taking the $200 I find out that there is a waiting period. Five days for accidental and 30 days for illness. It seemed a little odd as I have already paid my premiums for the month and couldn't understand why I wouldn't be able to use them if I've already paid and my effective date started when I paid. However the company refused my claim and stated it is an illness and will now be classified as a pre-existing illness even though it happened after my start date of premiums and they will not cover anything going forward that has to do with my dogs knees.. this is the biggest insurance scam I have ever heard of. If I'm paying premiums for something that wasn't existent prior to me not having insurance, It should be covered. However after sharing this information with the insurance company they continue to argue saying it's an illness even though the medical vet said it's not an illness it's accidental. This company does have some pretty shady reviews however it seemed to be the only company that did direct billing so I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt. However I would suggest saving your money and going with a better company. Because Trupanion just wants to take all your money and they don't wanna pay out anything When the time is needed. I have demanded a full refund of my money and to cancel premiums and I will never tell my friends or family with pets to go with this company. save your money!!
Embrace - Not worth the expense
Nearly all claims submitted over 2+ years were denied outright or when paid the reimbursement was a fraction of what we paid to our veterinarian.
Even with partial reimbursement when our dog had pneumonia and our cat had skin lesions we never came close to the amounts we paid for premiums. We would have better better off just paying the vet bills with no insurance rather than paying the premiums.
Spot - Claim approved, payment never came
I've made about 6 calls, 4 in one day. They covered my claim and then said it was processed on their end on 3/10, it's 3/18 and the payment is nowhere to be found. At first they said call if it's not there in 3 days, now all the sudden it's 7-10 days. They just keep telling me that it's "approved and paid out" on their end, but they can't even tell me the full account number they sent it to. I've been back and forth with them and the bank for DAYS, the bank has ZERO record and it was never direct deposited. I had to escalate it to a manager on the 6th call because they just kept saying it looked like it was paid in their system and wouldn't give me any answers besides "call your bank". Finally they agreed to put a trace on the payment and said it would likely take a full day to go through and they'd call me with the info. 2 days later, no phone call and no info. Cancelling as soon as they pay me.
Update: it's March 24, Spot responded to this review saying they'd "look into it" 3 days ago and I haven't heard anything from them and I'm still missing my almost $700 they owe me.
Update: 4/1/2025, no reimbursement
Trupanion - Disappointed with Trupanion’s Coverage – Not Worth It!
I initially chose Trupanion because of its per-condition deductible, which seemed like a great deal. The idea that once you pay the deductible for a condition, you’re covered for life sounded like a financial safety net. But there’s a catch—what you think a condition is and what they classify it as can be entirely different.
I have a golden retriever and live in California, where vet care is already expensive. Over the years, I’ve paid thousands out of pocket for the same recurring issues, thinking I'd eventually see the benefit of having met the deductible. Instead, I was repeatedly disappointed to find that Trupanion either classified the conditions differently or found other ways to reduce meaningful coverage.
To make things worse, Trupanion doesn’t cover exam fees, or certain other essential costs, meaning that even if they approve a claim, you still end up paying a large portion of the bill yourself. So between denied claims, reclassified conditions, and excluded fees, I was left covering far more than I ever expected.
Yesterday, when they pulled the same stunt yet again for one of my recent claims, I finally sat down and did the math. And what I found was infuriating:
Total amount claimed (across multiple years): $18,785.07
Total amount paid by Trupanion: $4,074.02
Percentage of total expenses actually covered: 21.69%
And this doesn’t even factor in the monthly premiums I paid on top of it. When I do the math, I might as well have skipped insurance altogether and just covered my pet’s medical bills myself. It would have cost me about the same, if not less.
Now, I am considering switching to a different pet insurance. While they have a waiting period for curable pre-existing conditions, I am happy to wait it out—because let’s be honest, Trupanion isn’t paying for those conditions anyway. At this point, I might as well put everything out of pocket while I wait for better coverage.
If you're considering Trupanion, think twice. Their deductible structure sounds promising, but their classification loopholes, exclusions, and lack of coverage for essential vet costs mean you might never actually reach your deductible for conditions you thought were covered. At this point, I feel like I’ve wasted money that could have gone directly into my pet’s care instead of into an insurance plan that gave me little in return.
I wouldn’t recommend Trupanion to anyone expecting true financial relief from pet medical expenses. Save your money, start an emergency pet fund, and skip the frustration!
Embrace - I moved and they charged more money. Scam
I moved and called the change address. Despite the fact that I use the same vet they made my policy way more expensive just by changing my mailing address. Was scammy and the man on the phone was very unprofessional and rude to me. I canceled.
Spot - I am shocked at one of your…
I am shocked at one of your commercials, it starts out with a young girl and a word bleeped out. Shame on Spot ins. I was looking for insurance for my cat but will look elsewhere. Is this how you want your company to be known for. Cursing and bleeping? You know I am but one person, and one person means nothing to a company like you. But will all my hopes and prayers, I hope I will not be just one person. Shame.
Figo - The company considers everything a…
The company considers everything a pre-existing condition, even if you take your pet to the veterinarian and the vet "suspects" it might be a certain condition. They deny every office visit even if you are taking your pet because you are not sure what the issue is. If you do not buy figo insurance at birth, you might as well not buy it at all. Very disappointed this is a Costco recommended company.
Pets Best - Stay away
We signed up for pet insurance a year ago. We got denied our claim the first time we had to use it. You are better off putting money in savings for pet insurance than paying for a corrupt business that chooses what it wants to pay. My dog had NO pre-existing condition. My dog got his first ear infection, and he was denied. Now, we lose money paying monthly pet insurance and a vet bill. Do you think they would offer us a refund? Absolutely not! SCAM SCAM: The best advice I can give is to avoid this company.
ManyPets - Very poor services
Very poor services, they are only there to take your money would not recommend to my worst enemy, had a claim in since Nov 2024 and they keep delaying and changing my costs on my DD, and now they would like me to renew from April, really i have told them to forgot the claim and cancel my Policy
PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY
ASPCA - neutering and spaying lower reimbursement
Just got puppy Disappointing to find out you have lowered the reimbursement for spaying and neutering. I would think as a health care insurance company for animals. The one thing you would push is make affordable for people on your policy (whether it’s the first tier or a higher tier like we have) is reimbursing a better rate$$$$$ for spaying and neutering. Our vet charges over $500 and you portion should cover more.
