Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws Feeling the Heat?
Got this chat request today from Healthy Paws. I don’t have a policy with them, I just comment when I see the insane premium hikes they’ve been doling out lately.
Healthy Paws, folks are starting to ask questions about your rate sheets and what you publicly disclosed and what you actually charge consumers. I’m not an actuary, so I’m
no expert, but it’s wild to me that any state would sign off on a 200% 500% or even 1000% increase. Maybe they did. But it is feeling a bit shady. You should publicly disclose your algorithm and show us!
There are lots of people here who would love to see this information provided transparently.
We all expect annual increases. It’s the name of the game. But we don’t expect to pay faithfully for years and towards the end of our pet’s life, have our premium jacked up so high as to be an insult. So unless you have some kind of reasoning for that…or a promise to fix it, it’s impossible to recommend you anymore on this sub by most people with brain and a conscience.
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws - keep for now or cancel. What are y’all thinking?
What are y’all thinking of doing- keep Healthy Paws for now if your premium hasn’t yet increased or cancel it now before you continue to give them money each month and they have a chance to ridiculously raise your premium in a year or two? I’ve had them as an insurer for two years. My golden retriever just turned 7. I know, these pet insurance companies get you bc it’s so hard to get new insurance for older dogs. I’m hesitant to continue giving a company my money if they treat their clients this way. The amount of premiums I’ve seen posted here in recent months is alarming.
Healthy Paws - Dental only?
Are there any insurances that cover dental only? I’m currently with Healthy Paws, & while they are getting more expensive for now it works for us because of the unlimited payout if we need it. But last year he had a cleaning and extractions that ended up being over $2000 when all was said and done, and if he needs more this year I’m hoping to have some coverage. TIA!
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws is DOUBLING my dog's monthly premium to $135 — who can I move to that won't bend me over a barrel?
I love my dog but I cannot afford to pay $1600 a year for something I've hardly needed so far (since it only covers emergencies and not routine stuff). I do wanna insure him, but $135 for a healthy 7yo dog is beyond insane.
Is there _anyone_ out there that won't completely hose me on premiums?
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws
Healthy Paws just raised our pet insurance to an extra $100 a month out of no where! Has anyone else gotten a huge rate hike like this from them? This is Absolutely ridiculous.
Healthy Paws - Should I switch now?
Hi all,
I have a ragdoll cat who just recently turned 1. We’ve had no health issues thus far. I start seeing this subreddit pop up and saw horror stories of HP.
A couple questions:
1. I know a big part of if reimbursement is diligence. Our breeder did a health check on our kitten and gave us the paper work when she handed him over, but we still haven’t submitted it into HP (I know that’s on us). We started HP about 15 days after the exam. Will that paperwork be okay to submit now?
2. We are currently paying $30/month. Are we better off switching now instead of dealing with HP long term?
Thanks!
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws rate increase
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this pet insurance company if you hope and expect your dog to live a full life.
My dog is now 11 and had a cancer issue that was successfully taken care of 2.5 years ago. And I am 69.
I just received a rate increase from $83/month to $216/month. That’s a $133 month increase. Triple my monthly rate.
Healthy paws suggested I lower my rate by increasing my deductible. Or lower my reimbursement rate. Any way I calculate it, it basically comes out to cost me the same. And the cost would be prohibitive to go somewhere else at this point.
I WOULD NEVER HAVE CHOSEN THIS COMPANY IF I KNEW THEY WEREN’T IN IT WITH ME FOR THE LONG HAUL.
They were hoping my dog would die before they took a hit on their profits with my dog.
The rep told me there’s nothing they could do for me. I told her it was easy to triple my rate. It should be equally easy to lower it back down.
She said no.
Healthy Paws - Struvite crystals as a pre-existing condition = stuck with HP?
Hi all, I have two 4-year old cats on Healthy Paws pet insurance. I've seen the recent posts here regarding horrendous premium increases with HP, and am wondering if I should try to switch companies before my cats get older. My cats are healthy and I've never made any claims. My premium is currently about $80 for both cats (and yes, it did go up a good bit this year). I live in California (yikes).
My major concern is that one of my cats has a history of struvite crystals in the urine. He's never had a blockage, a UTI, or any urinary problems - it was an incidental finding on pre-op labs before a dental cleaning. He's been on prescription food since then and the crystals have cleared up. But I know this would be considered a pre-existing condition if I tried to change pet insurance companies. My question is, how broad might this exclusion be? Would I potentially never get covered for anything urine or kidney-related if the insurance company tried to blame it on the history of crystals? And if there's a risk of that happening should I stick it out with HP (maybe the premium increases won't be as bad for cats?), or still try to switch? I do not have access to an employer-sponsored MetLife plan covering pre-existing conditions. I've read some companies might cover certain pre-existing conditions if they have been treated and symptom-free for over 12 months, would that potentially include my cat's history of crystals?
Appreciate any opinions or advice. Thanks!

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance - Never use HEALTHY PAWS
Never use Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Period.
I’ve been with this company for eight years. In that time, I’ve filed maybe one or two claims, receiving around $400 total in reimbursements. Meanwhile, I’ve been paying monthly premiums that started around $50–$60, gradually increased to $80, and just this week, jumped to $200 per month for both my cats.
One cat’s premium alone went from $50 to $125 overnight. That is completely outrageous — especially considering both of my cats are in perfect health, no chronic conditions, and have had regular checkups, blood work, and clean bills of health.
When I called Healthy Paws to ask what on earth is going on, the rep could not have cared less. There was no concern, no explanation that made sense, and zero willingness to help. It was clear: they’re just taking money from loyal customers who rarely file claims, and they don’t care.
Over the past 7–8 years, I’ve thrown away nearly $7,000 for what? To be blindsided with a 150% rate increase and treated like a number when I asked for help?
This company is unethical, greedy, and not here for pet owners. If you’re shopping for pet insurance, I beg you: do not go with Healthy Paws. They do not deserve your business, and they certainly don’t deserve your
