State Farm - Umbrella policy confusion
Was hoping to get some insight before I call my agent. My $1 Million umbrella policy with State Farm has really gone up this past few years from $300 to over $1500 per year. So I started looking at it and saw the following:
Automobile Liability: $500,000
Recreational Motor Vehicle Liability: $500,000
Personal Residential Liablility: $100,000
Watercraft Liability: $100,000
I don't know what a Recreational Motor Vehicle is. I have 2 cars used for commuting around town. I don't have an RV or Jeep for off-roading. So what good is that doing me?
I don't have a watercraft. I consider watercraft to be a money pit and I'll never own one. I'm in Florida near the water, so maybe it's assumed I have a watercraft? I don't know.
I feel like I'm paying for a bunch of insurance I don't need. Any advice would be appreciated.
State Farm - finally able to cancel State Farm
I've always had a fairly good experience with State Farm. I had a fire claim around 10 years ago and they paid promptly. I also had a boat claim several years ago and, in spite of some issues, they paid that as well without too much trouble.
Last year they increased my homeowner's premium from $2k to $3k; then in November a tree fell on my house. Most estimates for repair were in the $20-30k range. State Farm's adjuster said the damage was less than my deductible ($9800).
I also tried to get quotes from companies that State Farm suggested. These seem to mostly be brokers for contractors and not contractors themselves. 2 never responded, 2 inspected and declined to bid, and the 3rd submitted a bid to State Farm that was the same as all the bids I received. As of last week, my adjuster was still "working on it". Meaning, I assume, that they were just going to wait it out until I gave up and did the work by myself. Note to State Farm: your strategy worked! Sitting on a claim for 4 months while a roof leaks is a good strategy for not paying a claim.
I've repaired much of the damage myself (basic carpentry), I paid for the tree removal ($3500), and I'm paying for a replacement roof. All of the roofers who quoted said it would be $15k to fix the damage and $20k to replace the entire roof, and since my roof was getting old, I opted for replacement. I'm getting close to $30k spent. Yesterday I happily canceled my policy and switched to another company at 40% less for the exact same coverage.
I understand that State Farm is in business to make money and not to pay claims, so I expected them to lowball the repair cost, but 1/3 of actual cost is just silly. What annoys me most is all those years of wasted payments for insurance that wasn't really insurance.
Hope this helps someone else not learn the same lesson the hard way.
State Farm - First car accident March 24. Questions about injuries.
Hi everyone,
On March 24, I was hit on the side of my truck from an individual. This was my first ever car accident, and we are in Florida. After he hit me, we pulled over to the side of the road and instantly I had a headache and my neck was hurting. I called the local police and they asked me if anyone needed medical attention. I stated that I had a headache and my neck hurt, but I was able to drive because I was still kind of more in shock and shook up about the incident and didn’t know what to do and wanted to get out of there. Dispatch told me unless somebody needed serious medical attention to just exchange information document the accident and file it with insurance. I got the older gentleman’s information took a video and a few pictures of the crash and left.
Since that day, I have been living on ibuprofen because I have one of those annoying little headaches that won’t go away. I tend to go to get some x-rays and all of that done from medical but I was just informed from State Farm that the individual who hit me does not have bodily injury coverage.
Unfortunately, I work in construction and build houses and flexibility and mobility are a key to my work. I currently am sitting in my bed and took the day off because it does hurt to rotate my neck and this headache won’t seem to go away.
I’m new to all of this and any advice on what I should do next would be greatly appreciated. I really don’t want to have to come out of pocket to get myself back into working condition on something that I didn’t cause in the first place.
TIA!
State Farm - State Farm Issues
So I signed up for State Farm Auto/Renters insurance and all was well. I decided to switch agents because I was not happy with the communication speed I had with the old agent, so i submitted an Agent Change request online.
It has been more than a month since the original request and only the Renters Policy moved. The requests show complete, but now I noticed my Auto Policy completely disappeared from my account.
Did they mess this up and cancel my policy? I haven’t gotten any emails or documents online stating this. This has been so frustrating and I just want to not have a lapse in coverage for their mistake.
Has anyone dealt with this or something similar?
State Farm - Advice needed: premiums miscalculated for years, I’ve over paid. Any chance of a refund?
Hello. Hoping someone can provide some advice on my next steps. The short version: I bought my house in 2016, at that time State Farm determined my house to be 5000 sq ft., it’s actually 2500 sq ft. Due to them thinking my house was twice the size my annual premiums were higher than they should be. This all came to light this week. My 2025 premium is now $600 less than originally charged.
My agent is aware and admitted the mistake but has also told me there’s nothing they can do to recalculate the historical values of my house with the correct square footage.
Do I have any recourse to get refunded for the past years I’ve paid the incorrect amount?
State Farm - Should State Farm replace all tires?
I got hit by a motor cycle and they were at fault. It destroy one of my wheels and tires.
State Farm will replace the one tire. I want all 4 tires replaced bc it’s 4 wheel drive grand Cherokee and the owners manual states to keep all tires the same circumference. Basically don’t put one brand new tire with 3 used tires bc it can possibly damage the drive train.
I’m pushing back bc I want them all done. What your take?
State Farm - Has anyone ever had to pay $825/month car insurance (state farm) for a 2017 toyota corolla?
It’s a long story but I’ll try to shorten it.
I’m not 100% sure how insurance works. My car is under my name but my insurance is shared with my parents. My parents have a few other family members included (me, one sister that is 25, an uncle, an aunt). But my Toyota Corolla 2017 is under my name, automatic payments under my own bank account, etc. I guess my parents own the whole insurance policy but the car is under my name.
My bill in December 2024 was raised to $400 (NOT full coverage)
They won’t give a clear answer as to why they raised my bill so high. But I let it slide. I saw it as a consequence to our current economy.
In february they charged me $825. No clear answer. They gave me unreasonable excuses such as being under 25 (I’m 28), or someone else under the policy is under 25 (no one is under 25). Someone that USED to be on it was under 25 but they got their own insurance under a different company over a year ago. But they used that person as an excuse either way. We even sent proof that they are no longer with State Farm and for how long but that wasn’t enough.
We dispute it. They compromised and said I won’t have to pay my “$400 bill” for March. Technically half of $824 isn’t $400 so in the end they won an extra $25 from me.
Today they told me I still owe $200 this month and $200 next month. That they’re splitting the $425 between March and April.
PLUS they randomly began charging my 25 yr old sister an extra $26 AND used the name of the person who was under 25 on that bill (again, that person has not been with us or state farm for over a year).
Does anyone have any idea what’s going on? We’ve never been late on payments, we paid off our cars, we never fight them when they raise our bill (except for this time because $825 a month is excessive). My last accident was in 2022, it was not my fault, I never filed a claim or asked for money to fix my car, I asked for info about my options 2 years after the fact (in 2024) but it was too late to do anything about it anyway.
I’m planning to cancel my policy with State Farm but I’m still curious about what is happening here.
State Farm - State Farm changed my roof claims date of loss and screwed everything up.
Ugh. So a couple of weeks ago there was a crazy wind storm in my state. I had some roof damage so I got it inspected by a roofing company who told me most of the damage was from hail, which was enough for a replacement. I was told to put in a storm claim with a date of loss for the last hailstorm in 2024. I put in the claim with state farm and I was very careful to tell them that the date of loss was for 6/25/24 and it was for storm damage. I received an email after I submitted the claim and the email says "Date of Incident: 6/25/24". 4 days later the claim is assigned to an adjuster, and we schedule an inspection. Today he comes out for the inspection and he has the date of loss as 3/14/25 and wind damage. He said he cannot make any changes and tells me to put in another claim. Claim is denied because of not enough wind damage. Again, I was very careful when I put in the claim and I never said anything about wind damage or a date of loss of 3/14/25.
Somehow the claim details and date of loss were changed between the time I put in the claim and the time it was assigned. I still have documentation (an email) that shows the date of incident of 6/25/24, but if I look at the claim online it shows 3/14/25. My local agent is supposedly working on this but I'm not too optimistic. What are the chances this can be resolved and I won't have to put in a second claim that will potentially cause negative effects to me? UGHHH
State Farm - Getting low ACV from state farm. Can I do anything?
It's a 2022 Genesis g70 RWD fully loaded prestige package and they offered me 31500. Kelly Blue book gives 31500-36000. Is it worth hiring an appraiser to raise the price? The adjuster doesn't seem to want to budge.
State Farm - At-fault party’s insurance asking for blanket release?
I was involved in a multi-vehicle accident almost two years ago. As the statute of limitations nears, State Farm who insured the at-fault party reached out asking for a blanket release of medical, work, and school records for a bodily injury claim. I’m obviously not signing that.
My insurance already paid the only medical bill I had related to the accident directly and seems to have collected money for the vehicle and related expenses from State Farm. Am I obligated to provide State Farm any other documentation for the claims that have already been paid? Want to put this saga to rest for good.
