Going with Trupanion has been one of the biggest mistakes. We have 2 Boston terriers in our policy for the last 5 years and we may as well have thrown our money in the toilet rather then had our insurance with trupanion. First off, when you call to sign up they literally try to tell you everything is covered aside from pre-existing conditions.... But just wait, cause soon you will find that anytime you have to submit an invoice, they come back trying to prove that it is pre-existing. Even when your vet calls them to tell them its not. Secondly, yearly fees jump up so much! My house and car insurance don't go up as much as they try and increase the coverage on our pets. we are talking on average 22-27% per year in increases. And all they can tell you is that" risk factors go up, would you like to increase your deductible to make things more affordable?" Yeah sure, get the deductibles so high that you guys never have to pay anything out... I recently had to speak to somewhere there to explain why they weren't coving my dogs emergency visit, and listening to them break down how they were not covering any of the $1400 was mind blowing... When I said that I feel like Trupanion as scammed me the last 5 years, She had the audacity to say "Sorry your pets haven't been sick enough for you to benefit from our coverages". Who says that!?!? This of course was the one time i spoke to someone there who went off the standard script. Speak to your vet before you enroll with Trupanion, I am sure most of them aren't their first options to recommended. Maybe at one point they were but things have clearly changed.

Here’s my experience with Trupanion: German Shepherd puppy, enrolled at 7 weeks old, no pre-existing conditions. Year 1: $86/m, $500 deductible Year 2: $88/m, $500 deductible Year 3: $105/m, $500 deductible Year 4: $103/m, $500 deductible Year 5: $66/m, $1000 deductible (I raised the deductible from $500 to $1000 to lower the monthly payment, which increased my out-of-pocket costs in the event of an emergency) Year 6: $74/m, $1000 deductible Year 7: $94/m, $1000 deductible Year 8: $101/m, $1000 deductible After 8 years with Trupanion: I started at $86/m with a $500 deductible in Year 1. By year 8 I’m paying $101/m with a $1000 deductible and carrying more risk. Take it for what it is. Just providing transparency for anyone looking for coverage. Hope it helps.

Beware of this Pet Insurance Policy - Misrepresentation I have 4 pets on Trupanion. I have been paying significant monthly premiums as they claim 90% coverage. I am really sorry i wasted my money and had a false sense of security. If you cover medical expenses, then you need to cover Vet Exam Fees which is part of the expense for a new medical condition. I have made two claims over the past five years. The first was a Neurology Consultation that my regular vet requested. This was denied as they said they don’t pay Consultation fees. Hmm .. ok , but other plans do. Recently i took my dog to the urgent care for a urgent problem. I payed $450 and Trupanion reimbursed me $43. Even with the co-pay $200 and Co- Insurance, this is a really low reimbursement and not worth having insurance for ! They did not pay for the urgent care vet exam fees , which was approximately $100 . When i asked this to be reviewed, Trupanion emailed me to say they don’t cover vet exams ,as its part of routine vet care. Yup it is part of the medical care for this health problem, so it is sneaky that they don’t cover it ! I am cancelling my four policies immediately and found a suitable alternative that covers all parts of medical care.

They have become greedy and uncaring in last few years, my name is Wayne Samms and I do not recommend Trupanion.

I was satisfied with Trupanion until my last experience. I had tried to access my app to submit an invoice and it wouldn’t work so I called. Young lady said she would look into it and in the meantime sent me a link. Submitted the claim got email couldn’t read date sent another picture of receipt showing date. Got another email saying needed all pictures. Called again young man sent me his direct link and finally got through, in the meantime he told me the app is no longer works. NOT IMPRESSED , I use that app it is fast and easy. Considering what I pay for my dogs insurance I feel we should have been offered the courtesy of being informed that this was being done. Bring back the app. By the way Patrick Utter was very polite and helpful.

These people will find any excuse not to cover your claim.

Trupanion’s entire model is built on profiting from loyalty and ignorance. They’ll happily take your money for years, but the moment you file a claim, they’ll weaponize fine print and distort your pet’s medical history to justify a denial. To anyone considering Trupanion: don’t just take my word for it — go read their Better Business Bureau (BBB) complaints. You’ll see page after page of customers describing the exact same nightmare: years of premiums paid, legitimate claims denied, and “pre-existing condition” excuses that don’t match their own policies. I’m extremely disappointed with the inconsistent and misleading practices of this company. My pet’s condition has been covered multiple times in the past, and I’ve successfully appealed similar denials for the same diagnosis and treatment. Despite this clear history of coverage, my most recent claim was inexplicably denied. This inconsistency shows a lack of integrity and reliability. It appears the company prioritizes avoiding payouts over honoring its own policies or supporting pet owners who depend on them.
