Trupanion - Run like the wind from Trupanion
Trupanion raised by rate by 56% on my dog who is not yet 2. In other words, we've only had the policy for about 1 1/2 years. She continues to be in perfect health too, no claims. What a breech of trust! I've never missed a premium payment.
Trupanion - Best pet insurance for brand new puppy with parasite?
I rescued a new 11 week old puppy and 24 hours later he was hospitalized for 3 days with cystoisospora, a parasite, and severe malnutrition. The rescue kept him in awful conditions and he was caked in stuff (food? Feces?) when I picked him up. He is coming home today with fair odds of survival and I am shopping for a new plan for him.
I have a 30 day policy with Trupanion from the rescue but they don’t cover parasites (wtf). I’ve already spent $8500 on his care. He’s going to need a lot of frequent fecal samples and re-checks of his bloodwork. He also needs another round of de-worming. Does anyone have recommendations?
Trupanion - Trupinion
I’m having. Hard time with them right now!! I got my female cat spayed n hernia repair through the local spca low income program before I got her insurance
Fast foward she now has pet insurance with trupinion since Jan she was spayed/hernia in September
They keep emailing me n calling me for records on her spay n repair said they have contacted the SPCA n they haven’t emailed back ! I contacted the spca they don’t keep records or notes form the spay program
So they emailed them n told them that! So now they are saying without proof she was spayed or hernia repair if I ever file a claim it may take longer to resolve stuff!
I’m starting to think I’m paying them monthly for nothing ! I got insurance so I didn’t have a huge vet bill if she needs to go to the vet n cause they pay direct !
Anyone else have this issue? I mean what happens when someone gets a cat off the street or wherever n it’s already been spayed etc but they don’t know from where n don’t have records!
Ugh! I feel like I’m wasting money!
Trupanion - Disappointed with Trupanion’s Coverage – Not Worth It!
I initially chose Trupanion because of its **per-condition deductible**, which seemed like a great deal. The idea that once you pay the deductible for a condition, you’re covered for life sounded like a financial safety net. **But there’s a catch**—what you think a condition is and what they classify it as can be entirely different.
I have a **golden retriever** and live in **California**, where vet care is already expensive. Over the years, I’ve **paid thousands out of pocket** for the same recurring issues, thinking I'd eventually see the benefit of having met the deductible. Instead, I was repeatedly disappointed to find that Trupanion either classified the conditions differently or found other ways to deny meaningful coverage.
Yesterday, when they pulled the same stunt yet again for one of my recent claims, I finally sat down and did the math. And what I found was infuriating:
* **Total amount claimed (across multiple years):** $18,785.07
* **Total amount paid by Trupanion:** $4,074.02
* **Percentage of total expenses actually covered:** **21.69%**
And this doesn’t even factor in the **monthly premiums** I paid on top of it. When I do the math, I might as well have **skipped insurance altogether** and just covered my pet’s medical bills myself. It would have cost me about the same, if not less.
Now, I am considering switching to a different pet insurance. While they have a waiting period for **curable pre-existing conditions**, I am **happy to wait it out**—because let’s be honest, Trupanion isn’t paying for those conditions anyway. At this point, I might as well **put everything out of pocket** while I wait for better coverage.
If you're considering Trupanion, **think twice**. Their deductible structure sounds promising, but their classification loopholes mean you might **never actually reach it** for conditions you thought were covered. At this point, I feel like I’ve wasted money that could have gone directly into my pet’s care instead of into an insurance plan that gave me little in return.
I wouldn’t recommend Trupanion to anyone expecting true financial relief from pet medical expenses. **Save your money, start an emergency pet fund, and skip the frustration!**
Trupanion - Starting policy early in life. Need help weighing different options.
I recently adopted a 1 year old Golden Retriever and I am attempting the long arduous task of finding the right pet insurance.
He is healthy and has no pre-existing conditions — albeit the one that will be documented once I bring him to the vet this week for anal gland expression (which isn’t covered by most insurance providers anyways).
I am aware of some of the health conditions that golden retrievers are susceptible to, including hip dysplasia and cancer. And, I know, based on first hand experience, that the breed is extremely accident prone. So I am opting to start the policy early to eliminate other complications from becoming pre-existing conditions if I wait till later in life.
At first I looked into Trupanion because I like the premium service of the provider paying vet bills directly (saves some headaches). And I like that it is on a per condition deductible basis, where each condition deductible can be met earlier in life. But I can’t get over some of the horror stories about increased premiums. I am financially able to afford such a service, but the rate increases just seem unreasonable.
I’ve also looked into Pets Best and MetLife. Are there any recommendations that you can make that I should consider? Should I just go with Trupanion?
Trupanion - Trupanion increasing rates 20%
Just got the email. Already paying around $300 a month. Now I get to pay $350. That's after one year of coverage for a one year old dog.
Trupanion - Trupanion 30-day no policy modifications rule -- Has anyone gotten them to fold on this?
I might get flooded with 100 "No, why didn't you read the policy language" comments, but it's worth a shot!
My partner and I have been with Trupanion for four years, and we have a love-hate relationship with it. (But it feels like that's common for most pet insurance providers -as with insurance in general). We have been fortunate to gain more financial stability in the past year and decided we wanted to add "Recovery Care" to our plan. This would raise our monthly premium from $145 to $190, but we decided it was worth it. However, when we reached out to Trupanion via online chat to add this coverage, they let us know that they have a policy that you cannot modify your policy \~at all\~ after 30 days of joining said policy.
This is wild to me because financial circumstances change, and...why would they not want to get more money? Now I'm seriously considering changing providers.
My question, before "jumping ship" from Trupanion is: has anyone gotten them to waiver on this policy? I'm also going to call their customer service line to see if I'd get more traction there compared to the online chat, but I thought I'd ask here too.
Trupanion - Am I getting fleeced? (Trupanion)
When we adopted our dog (now 6 years old and 44 lbs, a mix of at least 5 different breeds) we took out what I considered to be a “catastrophic plan” to insure her and help us avoid difficult healthcare financial decisions when she grows old, or sooner (though hopefully not). The policy has a $1,000 lifetime deductible per injury/illness and no maximum benefit. When we took out the policy it was $25.03/month. It is now up to $57.15/month.
A 128% increase over 6 years feels pretty steep, especially when she’s statistically speaking less than 1/2 of her way through her expected lifespan.
Should I be regularly shopping around the same way one does with auto or homeowners insurance, or are the chances that I will find a better value now that she’s 6 low? I remember reading when I took out the policy that with pet insurance it’s better to insure early when the dog’s health risk is very low to “lock in” a low rate and picked Trupanion because at the time they advertised modest premium increases being a feature that differentiated them among their competitors. I don’t feel like 128% over 6 years is modest, and if the increases continue to increase at the accelerated rate they have been doing so, I feel like it may be worth surveying the field to see what else is out there.
I like her coverage and feel that it works for our financial situation. (We are fortunate that we can afford regular wellness visits and any unexpected medical items < $1,000).
TIA!
Trupanion - PetsPlusUs is great, Trupanion is trash
I wanted to share my experience, as reading other people’s stories on reddit is what made me go with this company and i’m so glad I did.
I’d heard lots of good reviews, and my partner had no issues with reimbursement with PetsPlusUs so I decided to try them out for my dog and cat.
After my cat had surgery to remove an obstruction, they paid me back the exact amount I expected to be reimbursed, and it was very straightforward! I even forgot to update my address for my insurance so it didn’t match the bill, and it was fine (I think partially because I only moved 5 minutes away so my premiums weren’t affected).
The only slight annoyance was I needed to give them ALL vet records, and they wouldn’t process my claim until I did (so please keep all your pet records safely in one place), but I suspect the same would be true for all pet insurance companies. My cat is about 1.5 years old, and her insurance is $35 a month and they repaid $2,100, so it’s been absolutely worth the money.
While at the ER, a dog came in that was hit by a car and trupanion wouldn’t cover a penny. I overheard the staff talking about how terrible trupanion is for repayment (and its way more expensive than pets plus us).
Trupanion - Do NOT get Trupanion for your puppy!
Ok so this is totally my fault for not reading the policy documents, but the Trupanion deductibles are PER CONDITION, not annual. This means every time your puppy visits for a new condition, the $500 restarts. The idea is that once the deductible for a condition is met, your pet is covered for life for that condition without having to meet deductibles again.
Our puppy had splinters stuck in his tonsils and had to be sedated to have them removed. The total bill was $750, and between "examination fees" and the new $500 deductible (we have already submitted claims for other things), nothing was covered.
Here is the kicker, they not only didn't cover the examination/consultation fee, they also denied the "esophageal examination" which was the procedure to pull splinters out because of the word "examination". Here is ANOTHER kicker, if something gets stuck in his throat again, it would be considered a separate incidence, so the $500 will restart again! If your puppy gets giardia, it clears up, and he gets it again in 3 months, guess what, the $500 restarts!
I can see that this would be a good policy for older pets with chronic conditions, so you don't need to meet deductibles every year, but for a healthy puppy who gets into accidents from time to time, every incidence is considered separately, so mostly likely much of your expense will not be covered! I'm switching back to another insurance that my 5 year old girl is on. I wanted to try Trupanion because I kept seeing ads for it, but now I'm going to switch both of my pups to be with the same company while my puppy is still young before "pre-existing conditions" develop.
