Hertz - Hertz Rental Car overcharged me, then sent the disputed amount to collections. Help please!
Tl;Dr: Hertz overcharged me when renting a car. After customer service could not help, I opened a dispute, but on the wrong charge as I'm dumb. The dispute was closed and money returned to Hertz. Now they have sent multiple invoices requesting payment for this charge, and as of March 5 it has been sent to collections.
Hey!
So back in August 2024 I rented a car with some friends, to be picked up in San Francisco and returned to Las Vegas. We booked online and chose the extra insurance and have a layout of all charges in the initial email. We paid $350 CAD when booking. When picking up the car, we also added a secondary driver. The remaining $1680 was to be billed to the card already on file.
When the email came through after picking up the car, I saw it was about $230 CAD above what I expected, but I assumed this was a damage deposit or something of the like. When we returned the car however, the final invoice was still about $230 above what I expected based on the initial booking invoice, plus the additional driver. This is also taking into account the charge for dropping off at a different location, the extra insurance, etc that was all listed in the initial email. Unfortunately, we dropped off the car late at night and flew home the next day, so there was no staff in the office to speak to.
Fast forward a couple weeks, the two charges were posted and still remained, collectively, about $230 above what I was quoted, including the extras we chose. So I called Hertz. Customer support couldn't see any issue, but also said there was no manager present to speak to. They put in a request with their financial team to contact me. I was never contacted. A couple days later, I called again, and met the same result. I should have been more aggressive and demanded to talk to someone who actually knew how to look an invoice, but I didn't. Again I got them to request an email from the financial team. This time I did get an email from them, to which I replied and explained the situation.. And never heard back.
At this point, I just opened a dispute with my credit card. Unfortunately, I still wasn't sure which exact payment was overcharged, so I opened the dispute on the initial booking fee of $350. This means that this amount is refunded back to me temporarily, pending the final results of the dispute. In hindsight, that was obviously not the way to go, but at the time I assumed they just didn't subtract the booking deposit from the final bill. However, this was incorrect, and by mid December, after Hertz replied to my bank, it was deemed to be incorrect as the overcharge had nothing to do with the booking deposit. The $350 was returned to Hertz on December 13th. They already have the money. However, in mid-January, I received an invoice in the mail from Hertz detailing that I owed $350, with an invoice date of December 29th. So two weeks after the money was already returned.
Prior to this letter, I also called Hertz yet again, and finally got someone who felt sympathetic and refunded me the $230 I was overcharged. This was done through official channels as he sent the request to their financial team. I wish this had been the result at the beginning, but unfortunately here we are.
Now I stupidly ignored this first invoice letter because I assumed that once their financial team did a year end balancing of accounts, the disputed amount of $350 would be seen to have been refunded back in December, and I just wouldn't hear from them again. However, that was not the case, I got another couple letters from Hertz.
Two weeks ago, I emailed the address listed on this Hertz invoice, and explained, in rather pissed off terms I confess, the entire situation, and that the money had already been returned to Hertz. I made sure to iterate multiple times that they already had the money back that they were requesting. I got an email a few days later notifying me that my email had been forwarded to the Hertz collections team. I never heard any confirmation back from them.
Now, today I received a letter in the mail from a collections agency stating that they have been given the charge and I have 3 days to pay or contact the office or it would be placed against my credit rating. However, this letter was mailed on March 5. And I checked the mail yesterday. It just got here today, 7 days passed their letter date.
What is the best course of actions here? Realistically it probably isn't productive to hire an attorney to deal with a $350 collections charge. I will be calling the collections office today of course. But I wanted to get some advice from the fine people on here. I do not want my credit rating to be damaged.
UPDATE: Spoke with the collections agent who handled this, and she hadn't gotten to processing my case yet. So my credit is safe for now. I sent her my credit statements as proof that the charge has been paid back to Hertz. She'll update me later after she forwards this to Hertz.
If anyone has advice for how to handle this if for some reason Hertz doesn't back down, I would greatly appreciate it. Is it just a safer option to pay this charge, even if that means double paying them, rather than go through all the legal hassle? Like yes it's about the principle of not letting a company walking all over you with no recourse, but at the end of the day, I don't want to hurt my credit rating or have to deal with thousands in legal fees with no guarantee it'll be covered if Hertz settled.
ASPCA Pet Insurance - ASPCA Pet Insurance is a scam! Beware!

Farmers Insurance - Should I Counter This Lowball Insurance Offer?
Got into a car accident last year (rear-ended). Sent a demand letter to Farmers Insurance asking for:
* **$4,523** in gross medical expenses (I attached the detailed reports/receipts for them)
* **$33,000** for pain and suffering
* **$6,295** for diminished value (they said this will be handled separately)
Yesterday, they offered **$7,823** for my bodily injury claim. Seems like they’re barely covering my medical bills and throwing in a small amount for pain and suffering (10% of what I requested).
Should I counter? If so, should I slightly lower my initial demand (say $25K for pain and suffering) to show I’m negotiating in good faith, or should I stay firm on the original amount? Has anyone been through this process without an attorney and successfully negotiated a higher payout?
Btw, when my vehicle was in the shop, I gave the shop the insurance's contact info and the insurance paid the shop.
Looking for advice on next steps before I respond. Any input is appreciated!
Geico - Investigating location of Vehicles
I have 3 vehicles under my name, we were in the middle of moving between cities and I decided to change the location. Due to last minute changes, we decided to stay at our current location. I went to log back into geico to change it back and it says they locked my account and when I called them they said “they are investigating the location of the vehicles”. What are my options now and what should I do?
Nationwide - Anyone have nationwide and get their dog tested for allergies
I’ve tried meds and special bland food and the dog is still scratching excessively. I got a quote for testing at like $1500 plus a $300 consultation fee. Was wondering if anyone knows if this is covered. When I called nationwide they were very vague, saying it depends and they can’t guarantee if it’s covered. Smh
Insurance company - Insurance cut me a check and then I had repairs but did I pay double $500 deduction
I swiped the side of my car (no lien) and Insurance company adjustor said take pics and put in portal. Said damage was worth$3700 and cut a check minus the $500 deduction; $3200. As I checked with bodyshops I deposited check as one guy said it doesn't hurt with final claim. Several weeks later used an insurance approved shop, over a month to repair. That shops original estimate was $5800 then final $7,700. So they charged me a $500 deductible and then Said to pay them the $3200 from insurance check. But Insurance check already took out $500 deductible and the shop just charged my CC $500. Shouldn't it be $2700 I pay Sthem (3200-minus $500) Insuirance already held theduditble and then I get charged by the body shop too?
Fidelity - 403b fix - how to close - summer savings leeched in fees
A friend is in a fix - seeking to get some expert's thoughts here:
Is there an option to close 403b? who to ask? Should it be the company (Fid in this case) or the benefits team.
unfortunately he worked for a short term in a school summer position and saved 400$ in 403b. did not know that there will be a fee of 70$ charged every year ( ridiculous amount ). No longer doing the job but will be a student another few years.
Fidelity says benefits has to terminate the employee status and only then funds can be taken or account closed.
benefits say they can't terminate until he remains a student, even if not doing the summer job.
The balance now is 330$ :( He's quite upset understandably.
Pretty soon will come 0 if no action taken
What are his options?
Fidelity chat isn't helpful and say cannot close since he is still active in status.
It is a mistake hoping to save, without realizing the fee unfortunately.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

Bristol West - filed a claim with bristol west, not sure if proving innocence will be difficult?
yesterday morning i got into a fender bender. i was waiting at a red light on a 3 lane road. left lane is a left turn/u-turn lane. middle lane (the one i’m in) is a straight only lane. right lane is a right turn only lane. the light turns green (i’m first in line at this light), and i slowly start accelerating (i have become a very defensive driver because the city i live is filled with actual idiot drivers, so i never take off at an intersection for fear of someone running the red and t-boning me) to cross the intersection. all of a sudden, a car is in front of me and hits the front right of my car with the front left/side of their car. she was in the right lane and made a u turn from there (or was trying to). i feel like it’s pretty straight forward that moving to the left in capacity from a right turn only lane puts her at fault, but i don’t know how this all works.
i recently turned 24 so my insurance is still a bit high, and im waiting until 25 to get comprehensive collision when it’s more affordable for me. so, i’ve had to file through their claims, bristol west. i didn’t call the police for this accident; i was rear ended really horribly two years ago in this same town and it took 2+ hours for a cop to arrive. i have a large event happening at work this week and i legitimately didn’t have the time to spare to wait for an officer to show up. neither of us were hurt, and the damage isn’t too horrible (from what i can tell) so i couldn’t risk missing my morning at work. i know this isn’t great as a police report would help with the story, but i can’t change the past.
does anyone have any experience with this? the girl who hit me was very apologetic to my face, but im worried that her story/her insurance (known for high-risk drivers) will try to swindle me and i don’t have my own collision insurance. does this seem straight forward enough or am i in for a headache? thank you for your help, advice, and guidance.
edit: would it be worth it to go on my cities FB page and ask if there were any witnesses? it’s a pretty common intersection and my city is relatively small. also, should i contact the police department to see if there is intersection footage? i just want to be as prepared as possible since i don’t have any dashcam footage. thanks
AAA - I'm at fault - bodily injury claim against me
I live in California covered by AAA. Last year, March 2024, I was in an accident. I was found to be at fault. At the time I was sent a letter from AAA telling me that the other driver, who is also covered by AAA, had hired an attorney and that they were asking me to disclose my insurance policy limits. I refused and just let AAA handle it. Just yesterday, over a year later, I recieved a letter from AAA saying that they have recieved a settlement demand for the full amount that my policy will pay out, for bodily injury, and that they are in the process of evaluating the demand. They must respond to the demand by April 24, 2025. They also informed me that should the other driver file a lawsuit against me, they will be providing me with an attorney. I'm currently unemployed and am FAR from being able to pay out should they decide to pursue a lawsuit. I tried calling my insurance adjuster this morning, but of course, they were out and I had to leave a voice mail. My anxiety is sky high waiting to see how this will all play out. Any advice from someone that has gone through something similar would be greatly appreciated.
