the at-fault driver's insurance - How to File a Small Claims Case for Mini-Tort in Michigan?
I was involved in a car accident in Michigan, and the at-fault driver’s insurance denied my mini-tort claim because they don’t have mini tort coverage. I still have out-of-pocket repair costs ($1,000), and I want to file a small court claims case against the at-fault driver.
I have the **police report**, repair estimates, and insurance denial letter as evidence.
**My questions** ❓
1. **How do I file a small court claims lawsuit in Michigan?.**
2. **What court do I file in—where the accident happened or where the driver lives?.**
3. **How do I serve the at-fault driver properly?.**
4. **What happens if they ignore the lawsuit or refuse to pay after a judgment?.**
5. **Has anyone successfully won a mini-tort case in small claims court?.**
Any advice or experience would be really helpful! Thank you!
Progressive - Necessary to pay $150 fee and forfeit plate? Commercial Auto Insurance in Florida
I pay an arm and a leg for commercial auto insurance for a child care related business. I have 6 vehicles that I'm charged around $4500/yr per vehicle (yes I've shopped this several times, no there aren't better rates available, very few companies will even write policies for this industry). We don't use the vehicles at all in summer so they just sit in a parking lot. In years gone by, I've been able to drop the insurance during those months to "seasonal coverage" which basically means they are comprehensive only, and have no liability insurance because they are not being driven. Progressive has no problem with this. This ended up saving me about $2000/mo for 2,5 months, all in, or about $5000.
I tried to do that for this year and I got an angry letter from the State of Florida saying that I need to forfeit my plates and pay a $150 reinstatement fee for each vehicle because I've "dropped my insurance". I've never gotten this letter before. Is there any way around that? Does this mean that I'm stuck paying liability insurance on vehicles that never see the road?
GEICO - Accident w/ gov vehicle
Location: Inland Empire, CA Date of accident: 07/09 @10:30am
This is my first car accident ever and I need help. I have a 2012 honda civic coupe and I was driving from one traffic light to the next staying in the right about to turn right at the next light into a shopping complex. There was a car speeding at the first traffic light in the lane closest to the left turning lane (there was only 4 lanes; 2 turning, 2 middle going straight) which I noticed and decided to keep some distance. Before I got to the second light, I was passing a gas station and I gave a quick glance to see the entrance in which I was about to turn into and next thing I know I get hit on my driver side. We pull into the gas station and exchange information. Come to find out he 20yr marine driving gov vehicle apparently he wasn’t supposed to be driving. I call the police and they said they would not come because there was no injuries to me or my mom or the other folks in the other car. As of right now I have emotional trauma and anxiety whenever I get on the road again. My adrenaline was so heightened I wouldn’t even have noticed if there was an injuries. His recruiter pulls up and says he would take the fault instead and that way less damage to them. I said as long as I’m taken care of with the right amount for my car I don’t care (this might have been a mistake and said in heightened anxiety and panic so please let me know if I was wrong, I gave a report with my insurance saying it was the recruiter already so :/ if so can I fix it?). I was okay knowing i might be able to drive my car a few miles back to the house but less than a quarter mile and the car started smoking so we had to get it towed. My front driver tire is tilted inward and my bumper and fender faced real damages. My panic and anxiety starts setting in real bad so first though obviously reach out to my insurance. I have GEICO (come to find out I don’t have collision coverage which is a factor I entrusted to my dad but story for a different day) and they have GSA (they are with USMC). My insurance already said I’m not at fault but can’t do much for me right now (they can reimburse a rental though). The people involved said they filed a report with GSA (implying I hit them which I figured but the footage says otherwise) and I’m going to put a claim in to GSA but I’m just waiting to get a quote on the damages. I’m told this process is going to be long and brutal so I could use all the help I can get. People are saying get a lawyer and some are saying don’t get one and I don’t know how to navigate that. My car is old so it’s only worth a little (170k over a decade old with a salvaged title with some issues like AC and wheel bearing) and it doesn’t make sense to me to put whatever money I get into it when I can put it for a new car. This is my first car so I’ve been super emotional and I have been stressed through this process as I feel like I’m navigating it mainly alone. I have also missed a few days of work because I don’t have a vehicle to get there. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. I’ll need all the help I can get.
I have footage I can provide as well of the accident.
SPOT - Pet Insurance Pre Existing Condition Question
Hi, I recently adopted a 1 year old retriever mix and he was limping so we had to get him checked, turns out the doctor said while playing he might have hurt himself and he will recover in 2-3 months but now I was planning to get insurance from SPOT or ASPCA , they have specifically written knee and ligament conditions are pre existing forever so for example if my dog gets arthritis later in his life, would that be a pre existing condition?
I am trying to find the insurance for my dog, I had pretty bad experience with FETCH so definitely no FETCH for us.
Can you let me know what's the best insurance I can use to insure my dog given this curable injury is not considered pre existing for any bigger condition.
Pets Best - Just Joined Pets Best - 40+ day SLA for Claims
Hey Everyone!
I brought home a new kitten on February 14th. We went to our first vet visit on February 15th. I uploaded the documents within a week of our visit and started the claim process the same day, to give my vet time to send their paperwork.
As of today, my claim is still not finished processing. I was told their email system was down and they're now processing claims in the order they came in. I was also told they have a 40+ day SLA to get it done.
Seriously? 40 days to process a "fast" claim? Why advertise speedy processing if you internally have a 40+ day SLA?
End Rant
United Healthcare - Out of network reimbursement
I went to an out of network Health specialist. I had 2 visits for around $200 per visit paid via credit card. They told me to send my invoice/receipt to my insurance company and they would reimburse me. I submitted 2 claims to United Healthcare and they were approved as out of network which went towards that deductible. I just assumed that after that approval, a check from UHC would be sent in the mail to me. It wasn’t.
I chatted with UHC customer service today and they said to contact the health specialist business to resubmit the claim as in network. Talked to the specialist business representative and they don’t deal with insurance AT ALL. They are out of network for everyone and leave it to the patient/customer to handle insurance reimbursements if applicable.
I’m at a loss for what to do now. I know I have to get it sorted with UHC but idk what to say or do at this point. How do I get reimbursed? Was I not supposed to submit a claim? Should I have gone through a different process and submitted something else? I’ve never had to deal with this kind of situation before and I cannot afford to not be reimbursed. Any tips or help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Progressive - confused with 'initial estimate' and how it works
so long story short, i was side swiped the lady who hit me admitted it was her fault.
i filed a claim with her insurance and they called me and sent me a link to an app to submit photos of the damage. the damage is scratches and dents on whole passenger side of my truck, along with damages on the wheel.
i get a call the next day stating they went over the 'initial estimate' value at $330.87 lol, i took it a body shop to get an estimate for all damages and i got a quote for $9,800..
a little confused how the initial estimate works, i called my adjuster but they do such a poor job explaining it to me as you can sense english is not their first language and when i ask what that means they just repeat and read the statement to me.
its the first time i have ever been in this kind of situation, can anyone help me? i have been stressing, but was blown away when they quoted me for $330 to repaint, and do body work and buy a new wheel on $80,000 truck.
Erie - Progressive Direct
I currently have Erie no recent accidents or traffic violations. I did switch to an EV which I guess triggered the recent price increases. My annual premium went from $925 to over $1700 for 2 vehicles. I did a quote at progressive direct and the annual price is about $500 less with the same coverages except I didn't include the accident forgiveness or deductible savings bank. Is it a really bad decision to switch from Erie to Progressive? The monthly price option for the two actually saves me about $720/year. Am I missing something that I'm overlooking?
Ucare - How to get Ucare to cover Braces
Can anyone give me tips on how my Ucare/DentaQuest can cover my teenagers braces because she has a very wide noticeable gap on her teeth from the fact that she was born with an extra tooth and had to get it removed and rarely smiles with her teeth anymore. She’s done 2 orthodontic evaluations for them and they keep denying her but she really does need them and that’s all she’s asking for her birthday this month but they keep telling me she needs a medical reason or doesn’t fit the certain conditions they approve but I can’t afford to pay them out of pocket.
Wawanesa Insurance - Update: Wawanesa Insurance Cancellation – Broker Responded, But Now I’m Facing $2,500+ Upfront Cost to Switch
Hey everyone,
This is a follow-up to my earlier post about trying to cancel my Wawanesa auto insurance (I’m the guy paying $750/month for a commercial plan meant for Uber Eats, which I barely do anymore). My regular broker had gone silent for a while, but I finally got in touch.
Here’s the update:-
My broker confirmed I can cancel the policy early.
However, he says I’ll have to pay two months' worth of premium upfront as a penalty — that’s around $1,500.
The new policy I’m eyeing (with TD Bank) is non-commercial and about $450/month, but they also require 2 months paid upfront to start coverage — that’s another $900.
So basically, to switch policies, I’d need to cough up $2,400–$2,500 upfront, just to get out of this $750/month cycle.
Now I’m stuck asking myself:
Is it even worth switching, or should I just suck it up and keep paying monthly till my current policy ends in November?
Will I even save enough in the long run to justify the upfront hit?
Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation — switching from commercial to personal auto insurance mid-term?
Any creative options or negotiation tips I could try with either Wawanesa or TD?
I’m still trying to be financially smart here — just don’t want to end up spending more just to spend less later. Appreciate all your input!
