They overcharge for premums once your dog turns a certain age, forcing you to cancel and then leave you with nothing for your pet. Disgraceful!
Nationwide - Doesn’t explain very well
At first I sent in a bill I paid and they denied it because it wasn’t itemized… so I asked the vet for a bill that was itemized and when i received it , I sent in the itemized bill and nationwide is still denying the claim with no explanation.

Overall, I am extremely unhappy with MetLife Pet Insurance policies and service. The only reason I have stayed on this insurance plan is because if I switch to another provider anything that is currently covered under MetLife policy will be considered pre-existing under a new plan.
The insurance model feels like this company exists only for profit without any regard for the wellbeing of people's pets. I am specifically frustrated that my dog's eye condition (pannus) is not covered. Months prior to her diagnosis, I scheduled her for a vet appointment to treat a bite mark and eye redness in one eye. At this appointment, I arbitrarily said the issue started "a couple weeks ago” after playing with another dog - I had waited until the policy started to schedule this appointment because this was our first time at a vet being insured. During this appointment, they could not determine why my dog’s eye was irritated, other than speculating that it was a play injury. She was also treated for a bite at this appointment. Within a week of this appointment, the eye redness went away without treatment. While at first covered, MetLife later retracted coverage after my dog saw a specialist for eye redness in both eyes, citing the initial appointment as proof that the issue began before policy coverage. I appealed the decision, got a doctor from the clinic of the first appointment to sign off that there was no evidence that the issue treated during that first appointment was chronic or pre-existing, nor necessarily related to the chronic condition my dog later developed well into the policy. My appeal was rejected, though I never received a letter in the mail and now it is far too late to re-appeal. Now, nothing related to her eye condition is covered, while I still pay over $100/month for her pet insurance. Because of this, I cannot afford to treat her eye condition and she may suffer permanent eye damage. I feel like we were completely taken advantage of, and roped into a pet insurance plan that is not best for us.
More recently, I called customer service with an estimate to have a lump on my dog’s side biopsied. Based on MetLife policy, the customer service representative cannot even say definitively whether or not this biopsy will be covered. While I don’t blame the representative, it is extremely frustrating that is the plain policy of MetLife Pet Insurance to never give pre-approvals for coverage.
I strongly advise against choosing MetLife to insure your pets - they are sharks that have backwards priorities, despite what their representatives tell you. For my next pet, I will be choosing a different provider.
MetLife - Takes a very long time to process claims.
Good insurance so far, only problem is claims take a very long time. Sometimes up to 3 weeks to process.

Healthy Paws - Not very Responsible or reputable
We have been paying for insurance with Healthy Paws for 10 years. Our premium has gone up substantially and we have rarely used the policy. We recently had a claim where our dog had an illness and the vet gave us his notes documenting the issue. Healthy paws dismissed it as a well visit and refused to pay. We appealed the claim and have not heard back. They keep saying it is being looked at with no resolution. It seems more like a scam and not worth having the insurance with them. We have used other companies in the past that were much more reputable and responsive.

I applied, sent my dogs records, paid and I got an email weeks later with different coverage. I based the vet care based on the information I originally orgered.
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws suddenly increased my rates exhorbitantly!
I have been a faithful customer of Healthy Paws singing their praises since 2017, starting at $50 a month for a 2 yr old dog. Each year they raised my premium until it is now $183 a month, even though I only filed a couple of small claims each year and they do not cover vet exam fees. Now all of a sudden they increased my rate to $467 a month which is a 255% rate increase. When questioning customer service why, it was obvious they no longer cared about me. I was told to do $1000 deductible at 50% reimbursement, but my premium would still be almost double what I am paying now and with a $1000 deductible I would never be able to use the insurance. NOT ACCEPTABLE!
They claim it is because vets have raised their prices so much in California that the company is not sustainable. Strange because my two vets have not raised their rates for over 4 years and if that were the case why are other insurance companies charging a lot less? Wouldn't they not be sustainable either if that were the facts? My online research shows they had to pay out approximately $4.6M to customers for a class action suit they lost a few years ago in another state. Could this be the reason?
I faithfully paid all my premiums for eight years on time and hardly filed any claims. Now I am forced to shop for insurance with pre-existing conditions like allergies or arthiritis which is totally unfair business practice. Be aware! They could get rid of you too, by raising your premium exhorbitantly when your dog reaches a certain age. Read ALL the reviews before signing up because it appears I am not alone.
