Nationwide - Website and sign up easy to use
Easy to sign up, difficult to renew. Three stars because they decided not to renew my policy and didn't give me a way to switch to another plan
Healthy Paws - Beware: Bait-and-Switch Pricing That Betrays Loyal Pet Parents
I’ve had Healthy Paws insurance since adopting my girl at age 1. Back then, I was paying around $40/month. Over the years, despite never meeting my deductible and having a perfectly healthy pup, my premiums steadily rose—eventually reaching $93.25. I stayed with them because I believed the rhetoric that early enrollment protected me from age-based price hikes, and I knew it would be difficult to get new coverage as she got older.
Yesterday, I received notice that my monthly premium is jumping to $236.81 in just two months. That’s a 254% increase from what I’m paying now—and nearly a 600% increase from when I started. For the exact same dog. With zero claims.
I feel blindsided and betrayed. This is not just inflation or rising vet costs—this is a textbook bait-and-switch. Healthy Paws markets itself as different, claiming their premium increases are based on broader trends, not your individual pet’s age. But that’s clearly not true.
Only now did I learn there was a class action lawsuit filed over this very issue. I wish I’d known sooner—but the damage is done. After years of faithfully paying premiums just to preserve coverage for my aging pup, I now can’t afford the care she might need because the rug has been pulled out from under me. It’s heartbreaking.
Healthy Paws built its brand on compassion and transparency. This is neither. If you’re thinking of signing up, read recent reviews. This story isn’t unique—just buried until it’s too late.
Nationwide - I’m done ……
When my pet insurance policy was up for renewal, I contacted NW and they told me that I needed to get a new policy. They told me they would have to close my existing policy before they could renew. Now I have no insurance. They sent out a questionnaire asking about my pet and what veterinarian office I was using. They contacted the office to get my dog medical records. Apparently after NW reviewed his records they found that his liver ALT was slightly elevated. NW considered this as precondition. I was told by my vet that this is not unusually in dogs and there is no precondition with him or do we need to treat him. I spent more money to have a complete liver panel done to only find out that everything else was in range. I went back to NW with this information and they came back with he needs to be treated. This was the end for me. Is NW a vet professional or an insurance company? I think my vet knows what they are talking about. I have had NW 10+years and I always highly recommend them to friends with pets. No more. Nationwide was definitely not on my side.
Nationwide - Adding additional pets
Wish when you added additional pets, they would also be included on the app. That makes it easy to keep all of them together.
Nationwide - Your automotive phone is just horrible
Your automotive phone is just horrible! I have been a customer for 6 years and to this date, it doesn't recognize my phone number. I have asked your agents at least 40 times to please look into it. Still not fixed 6 years later and 5 pets are insured with you. I have been paying 6 years worth of premiums and it still isn't fixed!
You change policies every year and the benefits get less, but the price goes up!
ASPCA - Read all the bad reviews first
After reading the unhappy reviews I decided to cancel the policy I applied for 18 days ago. Even though they claim to return your money 100% if you cancel within 30 days they did not. Now I will keep shopping for another company.
Pets Best - Do NOT use pet best
Deny your claim of thousand dollars and decline to do a pre estimate
Nationwide - I registered two pets paid two policies…
I registered two pets paid two policies and I only got one policy code but you took my money what's really going on
Spot - Failed on the first claim
I submitted my first claim for my dog's sick visit to a clinic which was denied within a matter of days without any phone call to me due to missing vet exam notes. I made multiple calls and emails to Spot confirming the vet had sent the exam notes and the claim would be reopened. The reps confirmed receipt of the notes. When the claim was not reopened as promised after 6 more days, I called again. This final time I called the rep said they never received anything which was a complete contradiction to the previous calls I had made. I cancelled the policy at that point since it was such a massive hassle on the very first claim. Waste of money on premium payments.
ASPCA - I filled out a claim form with all…
I filled out a claim form with all pertinent details but mistakenly used the wrong category for my claim. This shouldn't be an issue because the documents I submitted should prove my pet's conditions. They denied my claim twice without looking into the docs that I sent and I had to go through an appeal process just to get someone to actually READ the claim. Truly disappointed
