Nationwide - Intriguing Coverage, Not-So-Great Process
I don't like how I don't have an opportunity to ask questions about coverage or see a comprehensive list of what is covered prior to having to pay; I also do not like having to pay for 2 months before the policy is underwritten. It does not make sense to have to wait up to 14 days for the policy to be underwritten but only have 10 days to cancel and be reimbursed.
AKC - Denied based on their error
AKC Pet Insurance denied all claims related to the condition that led to my dog's death (bowel obstruction) because they had paid me $10 for when I took him to the vet when he was vomiting a few months ago. The vet took X-rays at that time and found no obstruction. Their customer service representative provided no recourse and left me with over $10,000 of bills for a very traumatic experience that ended in my beloved young dog's death. They claim that they cannot revise the previous claim because it has been "finalized."

Trying to jump thru hoops to get the advertized $25.00 Amazon gift card. Two agents told me to call Amazon!!! What a rip off! Still no gift card!
Trupanion Canada - Be very careful when dealing with this…
I am extremely dissatisfied with the experience I had with your company. Your failure to process payments in a timely manner resulted in two NSF fees on my bank account, totaling $150, including a stop payment fee. When I reached out to your customer service, I was met with resistance and unhelpful responses. The manager I spoke with seemed unconcerned with resolving the issue and instead focused on canceling my account. I was surprised to learn that your company's policy involves verifying funds with the bank before processing payments, which led to the delayed withdrawals. This approach is unlike any other company I have dealt with, which typically process payments on the scheduled date. I urge you to reevaluate your customer service practices to prevent similar experiences in the future.
Trupanion - Don't be a sucker like me. Dump them before they take too much of your money
Awful. They cover very very little and there are a large number of loopholes they use to deny your claim. Don't be a sucker like me.. they have extracted approximately $14k from me over the life of my dog maybe covering $50 here or there on bills if they were over $800.. recently I had a bill over $5k and they covered less than $800 of it. Waste of money and this company is a scam designed to keep their hand in your pocket and they will not come through if you pet gets really sick. Then they have a cust9mer service apologize and act sorry but themselves the rules .. and it's too bad .. you are welcome to cancel any time you choose but we will be sorry to see you go... (translation tough cookies! We got your money already!)
ASPCA - DO NOT sign up with this pet insurance…
DO NOT sign up with this pet insurance policy company. They have denied my dog coverage of a cardiac condition he developed as a result of his advanced age - 17 - claiming that it is excluded as a “congenital” disease. My vet wrote a letter in support explaining that my dog contracted mitral valve disease due to age-related circumstances and that it was never an issue before this, that no records in any exam indicated any cardiac issues in the past 16 years. Still, they denied coverage making this bogus claim. I’ve been a customer for 17 years and have paid well over thousands of dollars through the years, just for them to deny this??? My dog has hardly ever been ill before this incident. I am appalled at this company and would STRONGLY advise you to look elsewhere for your pet’s health insurance needs.

ASPCA - Claim loophole denial
I have had my dog, Stella, insured with ASPCA since I got her in 2012. On 10/19/18 I decided to upgrade my coverage to a newly filed and available plan. I recently filed a claim for Stella for a dental infection. She was also treated for dental infection back in 2017. The company has denied my claim, stating that my original coverage was cancelled on 10/19/18 and new coverage began on 10/20/18. After being a loyal customer with uninterrupted coverage for over 12 years, they are using this as a loophole to deny coverage. And of course at Stella’s age, I can’t really move her to another insurer. Beyond unethical and so disappointing.
Trupanion - Rescue Animal
Dear Alexis,
I appreciate you taking the time to explain Trupanion’s policy regarding pre-existing conditions.
I completely understand that insurance is designed for unexpected events and that your company must apply policies fairly to all members. However, I want to clarify that Girly was found in critical condition on the side of the highway. At the time, we had no prior history of her medical condition—we simply acted out of compassion to save her life. When we made the decision to keep her and provide her with proper care, we sought insurance coverage, believing that organizations like yours would consider the unique nature of such rescues.
While I respect the need for fairness in the industry, cases like Girly’s highlight a gap in support for rescued animals who have no prior medical records. It is disheartening that, despite our best efforts to do the right thing, we are left without assistance in helping her recover fully.
I truly hope that in the future, companies like Trupanion will support rescued animals in similar situations.
Sincerely,
Thalia
ASPCA - This is a racket
This is a racket, don't do it! Put aside the amount of money you would spend on this pet insurance into a different account. I have paid close to 30K to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance over 14 years and have only been reimbursed $3809. Kept telling myself it was "peace of mind". You are way better off setting up a bank account. You could rescue and help hundreds of animals with the money you would save!
