State Farm - Question about Renter's Insurance
I’m moving to a new state and currently have renters’ insurance with State Farm. I filed a claim for a theft in my building a couple of months ago, where a large amount of my personal items were stolen from what was supposed to be a secure mailroom.
Last Friday, I contacted a State Farm agent in my new state to set up a policy for my next apartment. After taking the weekend to get back to me, she said she had spoken with the underwriting department and they couldn’t write me a policy because of that claim. She specifically said I couldn’t have an active claim in the last **24–36 months**.
That doesn’t make sense to me. Why would the rule be a range instead of a clear cutoff? Is this standard insurance practice, and I’m just unfamiliar with it, or did she give me incorrect info? The vague timeline feels odd, and I’m wondering if she was just making it up or if she has the information wrong. I ended up going with a different insurance company anyway, but just wondering if she was BSing
USAA - USAA STAR Collision Center demanding repair authorization + POA forms before inspection
My car was hit from the side by an SUV. After getting advice from this subReddit, I opted to allow USAA to use a Toyota collision shop in their STAR network to do an inspection vs. going with a non-STAR collision center/appraiser (I still can pay for this out of pocket if needed). The consensus of this subreddit was that USAA collision centers are decent and wouldn't try to skip out on repairs just to keep estimate under the 70% threshold for totaling a vehicle (that was my concern as the car was hit near the hybrid traction battery and I believe it should be replaced)
The STAR-network shop contacted me individually and is demanding me to sign full work authorization forms and power of attorney before doing an inspection/estimate. In my state, I am legally entitled to an itemized estimate before authorizing any repair work. I'm okay authorizing an initial inspection but I do not want to give full repair authorization AND assign them power of attorney before reviewing and approving
Travelers - MN Home Insurance Jumped from ~$1,680 to ~$3,300 – What’s Going On?
We bought our home just outside the Twin Cities area in mid last year, and at the time our Travelers homeowners insurance premium was around **$1,680/year**.
This year, our renewal came in at **over $3,300**. After some back and forth, I changed the deductible to match last year’s, but the total was still around **$2,800**.
I contacted a few other insurance companies, and their quotes were all in the same \~$3k range. I was told that **all homeowners insurance carriers in MN increased rates significantly this past year**.
Has anyone else experienced this?
* Do you know *why* rates jumped so much in Minnesota?
* Are there any strategies to cut this cost beyond just raising the deductible?
Any insight would be appreciated.
As a note, there were several homes in our area that had their roofs replaced about 2-3 years ago, because of hail damage or something like that, I would have imagined that it would have caused the price hike last year, not this.
Progressive - Need advice!!
I’m looking for auto insurance but I keep getting ridiculous monthly quotes from $700 to $900. I’m a 2nd year college student, 20 years old had my license since I was 18, no accidents. I don’t have any car under my name, but i would be trying to get an old mercedes insured which is considered a “sports” car (family car they don’t use) for some reason. I am currently living with my parents, last time i called, progressive started charging my parents for me to NOT drive, to be an excluded driver. Which was crazy to me. I had to call and tell them I moved address. I tried getting a quote using a fake address saying I live with a friend but they started naming people in said address and asking for their DOBs (which i also read was fraudish?). I really don’t know what to do, i need to commute to school full time, but money is tight with classes, any advice ? Thanks !
State Farm - Who to File Claim With?
I was in an accident that wasn't my fault (other party received a summons), I called my insurer (state farm) to report it and begin the repair process. I was told by SF rep that I shouldn't have called them. I should have gone directly to the other party's insurance so I wouldn't have a claim on my record. I'd always thought my insurance company just worked it out with the other company. Am I wrong?
Geico - What if I don’t know address of accident
My son damaged his car leaving a parking lot. He didn’t tell us for a few weeks (he parks with the passenger side near the garage wall so we never see that side) and can’t remember the address because he was lost in a scary part of town. He definitely drove over something because the frame behind the front passenger wheel well is bent.
Geico wants the address in case there is property damage. I’m pretty sure it was an abandoned lot and nobody cares about a piece of cement. I don’t even know what to say to them. I’ve explained the situation but they keep wanting an address.
It’s a 2 year old financed car that we bought brand new and have been with Geico for 10 years and have maybe 2 claims. This is my son’s first claim and he’s got no traffic violations or accidents but this. He’s 25.
Allstate - Traded for a 1 year newer, less valuable car, insurance quote is double current premium
I use Allstate, and currently have two cars on my policy, and am happy with my rate. I just traded one of the cars in for basically the same car, but the smaller version with fewer options (mostly luxuries, it has all the safety features). It is worth about $3,000 less than the car I traded in.
When I called to make the change. They told me it will double my premium. No changes to any aspect of the policy, coverages, etc. A less valuable car. I cannot find a single reason my premium would increase at all, much less double. Anyone have any ideas?
UPDATE: Thank you all for your input. I’ll never know the answer to what they were thinking because I immediately called another (well known, reputable) company and within 15 minutes had a new policy that’s 30% less than my ORIGINAL policy was.
UPDATE 2: To the people who are digging in on “statistically it must just be more expensive to insure,” just…no. Aside from the obvious fact that no significant differences exist from one year to t
State Farm - How to handle insurance issue r/t auto accident. Brother w/ traumatic brain injury now being denied coverage for his medication/appointments.
Hi all, years ago my brother was hit by an auto while he was on a bicycle. His auto insurance (State Farm) covered the meds r/t accident and any appointments. Every few years they would send him in for a reevaluation IPE so this time the person that did the Psych evaluation said he was over exaggerating his issues and that even though he has a traumatic brain injury he no longer qualifies to have his medication covered. He deals with/ depression, headaches, insomnia, the only med that is being covered is for his antidepressant. Im not sure how to advise him. Do we go back to the original attorney? Do we fight it? If so, how does that normally play out? My brother's accident happened over 15 years ago. He was not at fault. Even though all of his testing showed significant damage and he has never returned to his baseline, has poor memory, can't think when there are loud noises, and is now doing "manual" work vs. owning a business that he had to give up. Any help would be wond
Home Insurance Company - Overcharged by Home Insurance Company - No Changes to Policy
My mom’s home insurance policy looked high so I called the insurance company and asked them to walk me through it. Without changing any of the coverage/details, they determined it was thousands higher than it should be and couldn’t explain why.
When I asked about a refund they said they could refund a few hundred dollars (she overpaid by thousands for this year). The policy renews in October so I’m assuming this is a prorated amount, is this expected?
Again, the coverage details did not change and they can’t explain why it’s that high. At the very least, shouldn’t she be refunded by how much she overpaid for this year? I need to dig through my parents’ paperwork but it looks like this has been happening for years.
Insurance Company - Why is my home contractor getting my depreciation?
Hi all. I'm confused and a little suspicious.
Long story short, had a tree fall and cause damage last year. Work is done, and the invoice came to roughly $65k (Siding + roof for garage and house). Insurance gave me roughly $62k, however I opted for a higher quality siding than the basic, so $3k was coming out of my pocket. That invoice is paid in full.
For the main structure (house):
RCV is 49k
ACV is 42k
So there's about 7k Dwelling Recoverable Depreciation that is available. However, my insurance rep is making that 7k as a payment to a sub-contractor that I've never heard of and in the email stated that the 7k is going to my contractor.
Why are they getting 7k more when I've already paid the invoice? I'll push back on the payment but I want to go in with facts but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I've asked the question to my insurance rep 4 days ago but she hasn't responded. Can anyone ELI5 what exactly is going on or am I getting bamboozled?
Thanks!
