Lemonade - What’s the deal with lemonade pet insurance!?
I submitted a claim on 4/12 for my three year old domestic shorthair cat for a diagnosis of FHS. On the claim I asked for reimbursement of the medicine ( Gabapentin ) and the cost for the emergency visit. I submitted all medical records as requested. Today 4/29 and the claim is still in review. I signed up for Lemonade when my cat was a kitten. He has no pre existing conditions and I take him to all his annual vet appointments. Lemonade is not very communicative. I only received correspondence when I reached out to them asking for an update. They say they are working on processing the claim as quickly as possible. Is this normal turn around time?
Lemonade - Stocks in stead of pet insurance
Hey everyone,
I had lemonade pet insurance for around a year but they don’t cover my dogs allergies (pre exist). They also upped my insurance to almost 50 bucks a month, before it was 35.
So I dropped them and have been putting money away each week in the stock market in case of an emergency. I have been doing this for almost a year and have around 700 bucks in it now (robinhood). Obviously the stocks are down right now and I’m down 30 bucks but historically they will go up again.
Just wondering if anyone else has decided to this instead, it’s nice seeing my money actually being saved rather than throwing it away with pet insurance and things they do not cover.
I first got my dog and took him to the vet prior to getting insurance and that’s why they don’t cover his allergy meds. NOTE: always get pet insurance before going to the vet if you choose to get it.
Healthy Paws - Further Update on Healthy Paws Premium Increases (Info from Dept of Insurance)
Here it is, the Healthy Paws rate filing so you do not need to struggle to find it.
HP requested a 44.8% increase... and got it approved. (Remember, the last several years already had similar increases).
Still doesn't answer how I got a 180% increase, so sit tight...
Taking my case aside, let it sink in:
They asked for, and got, a 44.8% increase.
Vet costs, even in CA, went up that much in a year huh?
So remember when they spit out the canned response online of:
*In accordance with the terms of the Policy and the associated rating rules, monthly premiums may change for all policyholders. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed with and approved by (where required) each states insurance regulator. Premiums reflect the cost of treatment advances in veterinary medicine, characteristics of the individual pet, and other factors, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region where the pet resides. Please note that premiums are not based on a given pets individual claim history; rather, premiums are based on the collective experience of all pets insured. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. The Healthy Paws Team*
remember:
1) THEY.ASKED.FOR.THESE.INCREASES. They then use this corporate jargon to say it went up in accordance with the rate filing (WHICH.THEY.ASKED.FOR).
2) The "transparency" is not transparent. Look how much digging one had to do to find the above screenshot, when all their FAQs again say:
Will my premiums increase?

State Farm - State Farm Homeowner Claim
Long story short.
Storm came thru Pittsburgh region. Pretty moderate wind and hail damage to roof, windows, screens, gutters and downspouts.
Had 2 adjusters that never called me back.
3rd adjuster scheduled a “ladder assist” inspection.
Had 2 seek now inspections. (Needed a re-inspection since first one was done with a wet roof.)
Adjuster 3 said “I put you in for a full roof replacement”.
2 days later I now have adjuster #4 assigned to my case.
Adjuster #4 states “your old adjuster didn’t have the authority to issue you a full roof replacement, management is disputing your claim, we’re having a engineer come out to your house for an inspection, the hail in your area wasn’t that big in diameter”.
It’s been 40+ days since the storm and I have an interior leak…. They just came out 2 days ago to inspect the inside.
Has this happened to anyone else? What’s my next move?
I have pictures of my roof from September 2024 when I had my chimneys re-pointed with no damage.
Now you can tell I have shingles bent from the storm.
It at a loss on what to do.
Edit #1: 1” hail came thru the area.
Edit #2: Correction to edit #1 - Roof is 10 years old. Looking into weather report now. 1.75” hail in my location. 60mph winds. 1/4 mile away a roof was blown off a grocery store. 4 of my neighbors have already had their roofs replaced.
GEICO - My umbrella insurance jumped 14%!
My upcoming bill is $797.00 through GEICO. Last year it was $701.00. $2M policy. Am I getting ripped off?
Hertz - [VA/NY] Car rental crashed, reported to Hertz, been months, no letter of claim — what next?
About 3 months ago, I got in a car crash where the car got fairly significant damage (I oversteered into a tree). I notified both the local police department and Hertz about the crash, got incident reports from both, and moved on with my merry life (after getting a replacement vehicle from Hertz). I got emailed a request to fill in a vehicle incident report from Hertz, which I submitted the day of receipt.
Now here’s the thing: I didn’t have any insurance from Hertz, relying on secondary insurance from my credit card. I don’t own a car, so there’s no primary auto insurance to speak of.
My credit card insurance provider requires claims to be submitted within 100 days of incident for them to consider them, and they require a statement of claim from the rental agency in order to submit claims. I’ve gotten crickets from Hertz in this respect the past two months…and I’m concerned that they won’t provide me with paperwork in time for me to appropriately file the claim.
I was *considering* sending Hertz a polite but firm letter using certified mail asking them to provide me with a statement of claim in a timely manner in order for me to proceed with this claim given that I don’t want to wake up to a $20,000 bill from Hertz in half a year or something that my credit card insurance policy won’t cover. Is this a good idea? If not, anything else I should consider? I’d appreciate any advice!
Jurisdiction: the car was rented in Virginia with a New York drop-off. The crash occurred in Virginia, and I’m a New York resident.
State Farm - What's the best alternative to State Farm?
I'm shopping around for car insurance. I'm 38F and never had anything but State Farm, but I was rear ended in an accident last year and had a mostly bad experience dealing with customer service and claims. My parents had a life insurance policy for my mother. When she passed away the office somehow marked me as the deceased party, which also lead to me having to "prove" that I was not dead. Keeping in my mind my mother and I share a last name and had our insurances at the same office/broker, but we have completely separate policies. When I told the agent that is what happened, she was combative even though the date of the change corresponded with my mother's death. After my accident, there were significant delays in getting my payment because of some issues they were having with setting up digital payments for me. All around bad experience with customer service and claims who were not empathetic or helpful. When I switched my insurance to a new agent's office for my new car, they put the incorrect financing information on my policy. Had to call several times to change. Realized that they had the wrong mailing address and garage address, even though I had also changed these. I, no joke, had to call on four separate occasions to try to change my garage address. They kept telling me it would be reflected on my policy within a month, but when I checked, my old garage address was still there. Conveniently, my rate at my new address is cheaper.
I will say prior to the past couple years I had great experiences with State Farm. It seems lately to have maybe gone down hill, and I am a pretty dang patient person.
It's not all about price for me either. I'm happy to change to somewhere with better service even if slightly more expensive.
Does anyone actually have a car insurance company they can recommend based on good experiences and/or customer service?
Trupanion - Wellness Plan Recommendations for Sphynx Cats?
I have a pair of Sphynx cats—both female, spayed, and 1.5 years old.
Right now, I have Trupanion for their pet insurance, and overall, I’ve had a good experience with them. That said, one of my girls had an allergic reaction earlier this year that required multiple follow-up visits, and the out-of-pocket costs for exams alone really added up. I reached out to Trupanion, and they said I’m allowed to have a separate wellness plan from another provider to help cover things like exam fees and routine care.
So now I’m on the hunt for a solid wellness plan—mainly one that covers exams, vaccines, and most importantly, the annual HCM screening for both girls. Trupanion might or might not cover that since it’s kind of a gray area between diagnostic and preventive. I’m betting they’ll treat it as preventive, so I want a backup plan.
Any recommendations for wellness plans or other insurance options? Every time I think I’ve found a good one, I come across a flood of awful reviews (though I know that’s just the nature of insurance). I do plan to call and confirm coverage details before signing up, and I’ll also ask if they can review my girls’ vet records to determine what they’d consider pre-existing.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Healthy Paws - Dilemma with 9y/o dog - need advice
I have a 9 year old mixed lab. He was insured as soon as we got him through Healthy Paws and he has been relatively healthy since; however, we received a notice last week his premiums would be increasing from $84/mo to $194/mo.
I found via reddit this was common for other California customers and reached out to a contact I found on reddit, only to receive a canned response about “increased vet costs” - no sir, vet prices do not increase 128% YoY. We also started at less than $40 a month, so costs for us had already doubled in 9 years.
My dilemma: I can find pet insurance from Spot, Figo, PetsBest (literally anyone) for cheaper than $194. His only preexisting condition is hip arthritis at this point, although he does have random lumps that the vet said were harmless. No idea if those are in his medical history.
Do I sign up for a different insurance company knowing I risk them doubling rates next year, and/or possibly claiming everything falls under preexisting conditions? Do I start putting away money each month and hope for the best? What would you do?
I’m so frustrated as we bought into the pet insurance thing and would have been better off starting a savings account for him 9 years ago. But now here we are, tens of thousands paid to a company who actively wants to screw us over so we cancel and no savings specifically for the dog or money to throw around for vet bills.
Allstate - All State
So I have auto insurance with All State here in Canada and I was provided a questionnaire for my renewal term which I filled out. All state says to fill it out otherwise there’s penalties and whatnot so I fill it out. They increased the premium on my last monthly payment before renewal and aren’t budging because we sent the questionnaire that they asked for before we paid the last payment so now they’re counting it as a policy change which is stupid. I work as an actuary in auto insurance and I’ve never dealt with this sort of stuff. What should I do?
