Geico - Geico increased our rate by $300 after updating odometer and said California law prevents correcting it?
We recently got hit with a $300 rate increase on our 6-month Geico auto policy just because we updated our odometer. Here’s the timeline:
- We bought a used 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV in August 2024. At the time, the odometer read ~30,500 miles.
- In January 2025, we started a new auto policy with Geico.
- Now, in June 2025, we updated the odometer to 36,500 miles through their system.
- After this update, Geico increased our premium significantly.
I called a Geico agent, who told me the system assumes 36.5k miles over the entire life of the car, starting from the car’s model year (Chevy Bolt EUV 2022). Since it’s about 3.5 years old, Geico calculates our annual mileage as ~10,400 miles/year, even though we’ve only driven about 6,000 miles in the 10 months we've owned it.
She also said that California law prohibits them from adjusting the previous odometer data, even if we can prove when we bought the car and how much we’ve actually driven. That part sounded the most questionable to me, but I’m not sure, which is why I’m here for some advice.
I’m not trying to cheat the system, we just want our actual usage reflected accurately. I can provide documentation of the purchase date and odometer at the time (from the bill of sale or DMV forms), but I’m not even sure that can help since the Geico agent said there’s nothing they can do to adjust the previous odometer.
My questions:
1. Is it true that California law doesn’t allow insurers to adjust for actual usage if it wasn’t reported at the start?
2. Has anyone successfully appealed something like this with Geico?
3. Should I just start shopping around now for another insurer that works better for low-mileage drivers?
Appreciate any insight or advice. This feels really unfair and arbitrary, especially since we were trying to be honest and accurate with our info.
United - How do people get surprise insurance claims??
I am in a situation where I need a surgery so will 100% hit my out of pocket maximum.
The max, 8K, is fortunately something we can readily afford. The only thing that scares me are all the scary stories about how they get completely screwed over for supposedly covered procedures and are in debt tens of thousands at once.
What I do to prevent this possibility or are those detrimental stories are from people who do not have any coverage???
My insurance is with United.
Geico - Geico erroneously canceled my car insurance without notice
Two days ago, I had an online chat with a Geico representative about updating the odometer readings for the two cars on my policy. The chat was short and sweet and went smoothly.
Today, I saw a mysterious credit card refund from Geico and logged in to find out that Geico had cancelled my auto-policy on the day I had the online chat. I called Geico just now and was told my policy was cancelled because "I called them to say I had another insurance" which is rather odd. I asked the agent to check the chat log/history to verify that no such conversation happened, but he said he does not have access and would have his supervisor (who can access chats) call me later in day. I am still waiting for this call.
**What are my rights here?** Geico -- without notice -- put me and my spouse at unnecessary risk for two days as we have been driving uninsured without our knowledge. Is there anything I can do or ask for?
FIGO - FIGO Costco pet insurance
FIGO Costco pet insurance. I’ve been paying $133 a month for a healthy dog. They literally only pay $50 a year toward vaccinations. I went ahead and cancelled. I just can’t justify such poor assistance for these expensive vaccinations. His vaccinations and annual checkup is $300. I am considering setting up a savings account dedicated for my dog. I should have read the fine print.
her insurance - Neighbor Scraped My Car and Denies It — Should I Deal With Their Insurance Adjuster or Go Through Mine?
My neighbor scraped my car in our shared apartment garage. I park right next to her every day, and the scratch on my vehicle lines up perfectly with damage on hers. To top it off, her paint color is visibly transferred onto my car and vice versa..
She’s claiming she didn’t do it, but I’ve already filed a claim with her insurance and an adjuster has reached out. The adjuster says they’re still trying to determine liability since my neighbor is denying everything.
Here’s where I’m stuck:
-Should I keep working with her insurance and try to prove it to the adjuster directly?
-Or should I go through my own insurance (which would mean paying a deductible upfront) and let them fight it out behind the scenes?
I’d prefer to avoid paying anything out of pocket, but I also don’t want to risk her insurer denying the whole thing and leaving me with the bill. Any insight from people who’ve been through this or know the industry would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Subaru Insurance - stolen car being considered a total loss
my car was stolen 2 weeks ago and the insurance company is considering it a total loss. this is fine, but they are offering me 13500 for my 2019 subaru 2.i0 premium sedan with roughly 91000 miles. it had 3 month old tires and a new battery. the issue im running in to is there are 0 of this car available within 150 miles of me with similar milleage. but when i look nationally it is showing they are shorting me about 2000, which would pay off my loan. im afraid getting an adjuster involved will cost me too much and not be worth it. any advice for fighting their appraisal? they couldnt do a fully accurate appraisal because they dont have the car. i asked to see their comparables, because if theres nothing local what are they comparing it to?
Blue Cross - Marketplace dental coverage that doesn’t really exist
Location, North Carolina
Our family has a marketplace health plan with Blue Cross. It includes free dental for children under 18. I bought a marketplace dental insurance for my husband and I but didn’t include the kids because they had the free dental on the health plan.
I have been trying to make dental appointments for the kids, and of course, there is a very limited number of dentists on the list that are in network. I have called a couple to make appointments and I keep getting told the same story. Blue Cross completely ghosts the dental office when they try to submit claims so the dentists won’t bother billing them anymore.
If I had known this, I would have just added the kids to the dental policy I purchased for my husband and myself. Of course open enrollment is over so it’s too late now and they haven’t really had a change in circumstance except that their coverage only exists on paper and is impossible to use. Now my only option is to pay out-of-pocket for their dental care.
Anyone else experienced this? What are my options?
Progressive - Proving Headlights Weren't On
US Florida. I was involved in a car crash recently and don't know what to do. What happened was that I was exiting a fast food drive thru late at night. The drive thru exits onto 4-lane divided road and there is a stop sign controlling the intersection. I stopped at the stop sign and looked down the road to see if it was clear. I saw no oncoming traffic, so I turned right into the left lane as I was intending on taking a U turn at the next available place which is fairly close to where I entered the road. (Yes, I know this is illegal. I got a ticket for this and I know I won't be getting out of it.) As I turned into the left lane, I collided with another driver who was driving in the left lane. I did not see this other vehicle whatsoever even though I looked before I entered the road. Damage to both vehicles was minimal and neither of us were injured. We were able to move to a nearby parking lot before the police were called to the scene and we exchanged information. At the time I was freaking out about the whole situation and not thinking clearly and only remized later that the other person's headlights obviously weren't on, otherwise I 100% would have seen them. I tried emailing my insurance company (Progressive) that was handling the case, but never got any response. There are traffic cameras at the nearby major intersection as well as security cameras from nearby businesses that I believe would be able to help, but I can't get any footage from them. I asked in person at the businesses and called the police department and they all told me insurance would have to handle it. So what do I do? Do I have to get a lawyer? Is it even worth it to do so?
Lemonade - Any advice on how to deal with a probable rejection that will likely result from inaccurate vet notes?
I've had pet insurance with Lemonade going on five years for my cat. I just had to submit a claim for her, but I'm super worried I'm going to get a rejection because the nurse took inaccurate notes. When we were discussing my cat's history, I said that her chronic gastrointestinal issues started after her first attack of pancreatitis 'shortly after she was adopted.' The nurse instead noted that her chronic gastrointestinal issues started 'right after adoption.'
I'm super worried that this will lead to my claim being rejected and my former claims being marked as fraud. Her issues didn't start until about 3-4 months after I got her vet insurance, and that was after the illness waiting period had passed. They covered her pancreatitis when it occurred in March 2021, and I adopted her in November 2020. Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare for the rejection which I assume is coming? Is the only thing I can do is ask the company to review her old vet records and see how they don't line up with what the nurse typed before that moment? Any advice is welcome!
Fetch - Looking to drop Fetch after price hikes -- advice for 9 y/o terrier mix?
Hey everyone!
Fetch just sent us our plan renewal and it's quite a bit higher this year. I'm looking to switch while my dog still is quite healthy. She's a 9 year old scrappy terrier mix, and has one pre-existing condition of a femoral head removal before I got her (which was pre-existing for her current policy as well).
She's also broken several teeth over the course of several years, which was covered with Fetch, but I'm worried it might not be with other companies (even though those were accidents and not conditions).
Is it worth it to switch at this point? I'm seeing some decent slightly lower quotes at Lemonade, Pets Best, and Embrace. But basically every company out there has a post on here bemoaning said company as a "scam." I'm looking for accident and injury coverage with a high max payout of $15,000 or more, deductible of $250-500, and no add ons.
