United Healthcare - Wrong Health Insurance Charged
Location: Wa State, USA
Last month I went to the ER, while they there asked about billing insurance and I told them to use my state provided insurance which they had on file. Apparently they charged insurance from a provider from my old job which i haven’t worked at since December of last year. I never signed up for health insurance from my old employer. I did have dental through them at one point but that was it. Today i get a bill from United Healthcare that states i owe them $4300 from my hospital visit when I shouldn’t even have their insurance in the first place. I’m not sure where to start to get this resolved. My old employer? Hospital? Lawyer? I’m not even sure if this is the right sub for this but I’m just angry and confused so any help would be appreciated.
Travelers - Home Insurance Claim in Appraisal, Insurance Company Hired Lawyers
Hi all,
(Reposting because I didn't know how to format)
TL;DR: Insurance denying approximately 40K worth of costs (approved line items, just more expensive in the region than their estimate), went to appraisal with adjusters, umpire selected, month later learn that insurance company is now represented by lawyers.
We experienced a water damage claim impacting a 3-story townhouse, all continuous wood flooring, walls, and kitchen cabinets, counter, backsplash, with Traveler's in Dec 2023. We are located in King County, Washington; the house is built into a slope not directly accessible to the street and is stand-alone (no shared walls) on a plot with 3 other homes.
My initial quotes from contractors up to 100K. I went with a contractor who quoted around 80K, good guy. Escalated through several Traveler's adjusters in Winter 2024 until an adjuster came in person in late Winter and agreed with our contractor and the work moved forward. The insurance company adjuster recognized that the costs were going to be pretty high and was working well with our contractor, it seemed.
I handled cabinets, backsplash, and counters directly with a subcontractor and my contractor handled drywall, paint, flooring, pack-out and move in, and more. I got approval from insurance adjuster along the way and ended up getting approval for all of the kitchen work, fully covered, around 33K.
Due to delays from Travelers and subcontractors, with materials being hard to come by, our kitchen floor was unfinished with nails sticking out until May 2024. We wanted to keep things moving and settled on cheaper flooring than an exact match that was available sooner than the Fall, so we moved out in May (I had gotten approval for housing costs in early May from insurance for several weeks). Then, for whatever reason, their adjuster stopped responding to my contractor for a few weeks in, approximately, late-May and June.
The flooring and painting work was finally done and the cabinetry, counters, etc. mostly got done in mid-late July. The work was mostly completed by August except for a few small things. The final costs of the new installation of cabinets, counters, backsplash in the kitchen, which I had handled and which had been covered, was approximately 33K which has all been paid out and completed. Mitigation was done for 6.6K with a separate company. The remainder of the tear down, pack out, dry wall, painting, flooring, cleaning, plumbing, electrical, etc., onwards from my contractor ended up being 105K. With the previous adjuster, the claim was sitting around 70k estimate from the insurance side with an expectation that it would go up conveyed verbally with their adjuster several times.
In this period, since the insurance adjuster had stopped responding, my contractor had reached out directly to Traveler's. At some point a new adjuster was assigned and then, in June/July, the case was passed through, I believe, 3 more adjusters. The final adjuster basically went through and wrapped up the claim, including recoverable depreciation, but didn't really acknowledge the actual costs of the materials, labor, compared to their estimate and essentially closed the claim at approximately 95K total, which included mitigation, kitchen, and the contractor's work. That left a gap of approximately 40K still due to my contractor.
After a month or so of back and forth, we agreed with the final insurance adjuster, to go to appraisal in November. We selected an adjuster. It seems that nothing was happening for several weeks and then eventually Travelers selected their adjuster and he actually came to inspect the house in December. Then per our adjuster, unable to be reached/unresponsive for several weeks. Once they did get into contact and went back and forth in late February, they finally agreed on an umpire. Then, out of nowhere, in mid-March, the third party adjuster representing Travelers informed our adjuster that Traveler's had assigned or hired lawyers to handle this claim and they were no longer continuing the appraisal as previously agreed upon.
Here is the policy language regarding appraisal:
...7. Appraisal. If you and we fail to agree on the amount of loss, either party may demand an appraisal of the loss. In this event, each party will choose a competent and impartial appraiser within 20 days after receiving a written request from the other. The two appraisers will choose an umpire. If they cannot agree upon an umpire within 15 days, you or we may request that the choice be made by a judge of a court of record in the state where the “residence premises” is located. The appraisers will separately set the amount of loss. If the appraisers submit a report of an agreement to us, the amount agreed upon will be the amount of loss. If they fail to agree, they will submit their differences to the umpire. A decision agreed to by any two will set the amount of loss.
Each party will:
a. Pay its own appraiser; and
b. Bear the other expenses of the appraisal and umpire equally.
My question is - why did Travelers go with attorneys after there was an umpire selected?
- Could it be something as simple as the timeline being so protracted? We have emails showing the umpire was agreed upon a month ago.
- I am concerned that, as I see in this community, our adjuster was filling the costs to try to get a better negotiating position... Not sure if that would play into this...?
- The work was expensive and challenging to complete but there are no line items that were not previously approved - they just cost more than what the insurance company estimated.
I have not heard anything directly from Travelers. My contractor has been wrecked in this process, it's been tough for me as well. The idea that we need to face an attorney is rough.
Appreciate anyone's insights or guidance!

Geico - Did I just screw myself?
Hello! First time posting in this sub, I think this type of post is allowed. Long story short, I purchased an auto policy through Geico in mid-July for a car I am being gifted. I realized the next day that I wasn't going to be able to take ownership for 3-4 weeks and ended up calling to cancel the policy.
I called back today to restart the policy and they are quoting me $400+ more for exactly the same policy. Did I completely screw myself here? I told the agent I was going to shop around, which I am happy to do, but... what a pain. Is there a strategy I can use to have Geico honor the original quote?
Thank you in advance!!
Porsche - Need help in understanding.
I purchased a brand-new 2023 Porsche Macan S for $82,000. After taxes, the total came to $86,000. I also purchased all available extended warranties and protection plans through Porsche, covering the engine, transmission, wheel/tire protection, paint/weather discoloration, etc., bringing the total investment to approximately $102,000.
As of 2025, the car has only 14,000 miles, mostly from commuting to and from work. The vehicle was in excellent condition with no engine damage.
Recently, I was involved in a collision accident, and the fault was determined to be entirely on the other party. Unfortunately, my insurance company has declared the car a total loss because the repair cost is around $40,000, and the vehicle would receive a salvage title, thereby reducing its market value significantly. My insurer has offered me $72,000 as the settlement.
This situation leaves me $30,000 short of what I initially paid, even without factoring in the warranty and extras.
🟦 1. Can I still negotiate with the insurance company after they totaled my car?
🟦 2. Should I buy back the totaled car and fix it?
🟦 3. I had 5-year warranties — if the car is totaled after 2 years, will I get refunded for the remaining 3 years?
Thank you to anyone who sees this message and replies back.
Amica - Arbitration for Rental Car Costs
Good afternoon,
I was in a car accident in December, 2024. OP was found at fault within 24 hours of the claim being submitted, however, it took over 2 months to have my car repaired. My insurance company only covered 30 days of rental coverage and I paid out of pocket around $600 for the additional days needed. I submitted a claim to have that reimbursed and my insurance company stated they are filing an Arbitration. Is this usual for this case scenario? How long do these usually take to resolve? State Farm is OP's insurance and I have Amica.
Progressive - confused with 'initial estimate' and how it works
so long story short, i was side swiped the lady who hit me admitted it was her fault.
i filed a claim with her insurance and they called me and sent me a link to an app to submit photos of the damage. the damage is scratches and dents on whole passenger side of my truck, along with damages on the wheel.
i get a call the next day stating they went over the 'initial estimate' value at $330.87 lol, i took it a body shop to get an estimate for all damages and i got a quote for $9,800..
a little confused how the initial estimate works, i called my adjuster but they do such a poor job explaining it to me as you can sense english is not their first language and when i ask what that means they just repeat and read the statement to me.
its the first time i have ever been in this kind of situation, can anyone help me? i have been stressing, but was blown away when they quoted me for $330 to repaint, and do body work and buy a new wheel on $80,000 truck.
Citizens - Appraisal for homeowners and halting ordinance in law/personal items coverage.
Hi all! So I'm in the appraisal process for my homeowners- mine is a hurricane claim (wind only not flood damage). Do they halt processing stuff like ordinance in law while they are in the appraisal process? What about personal inventory items (yes, 5 months since milton and they have done nothing with that)? I want them to see the house stripped down so we still have another month until appraisal. What should I do? I have waited a very long time to replace things. I need stuff like a frige and other essentials. Atleast for the personal items i feel like i should get atleast an "estimate/supplement" thing generated before they start using it as a tool to negotiate paying me less. They said it will be resolved at the end but they have not been forthcoming to resolve anything nor do we see an end in sight. We are kinda going out on a limb and assuming that we are going to sue even after appraisal.
It's Florida and this is with citizens if that info is relevant.
Pets Best - Pets Best covers acupuncture but PEMF is an uncovered “alternative and holistic” therapy
How is acupuncture not “alternative and holistic” but PEMF is? I’m treating hind leg pain and arthritis in my young dog, was recommended to get PEMF involved, but I just checked our policy and it’s not covered.
Anyone have any success with appealing PEMF coverage? I’m sure that I’m out of luck as it’s specifically excluded in the policy, but I’m wondering if it’s worth pushing for with a vet note.
Geico - Cat stolen twice in two months. Should I file another claim?
Proud owner of a 2013 prius for about a year now. During memorial day weekend, my catalytic concerter was stolen while i was parked in Brooklyn. Got a police report, filed a claim with geico, and got it fixed after a couple weeks ($500 out of pocket cost for deductible)
This morning when parked in a pretty good neighborhood on Long Island, turned on the car and heard the hellcat noise. Made my stomach sink, worst feeling ever.
I'm now contemplating what to do. I'm sure in NYS, any decent fix would run me at least $1,500, likely much more. The last fix receipt showed $3,200 just for parts. But I'm afraid to file a big claim twice in such a short time span. Will my insurance consider non renewal or flag me as a risky driver? I'm pretty new to having my own auto insurance, any help or suggestions are welcome. Can't really afford anything beyond $500 right now😓
The way people go around doing this type of stuff is sickening. Makes me so upset lol
State Farm - Car Insurance costs. Am I overpaying?
Just got my renewal notice, and my car insurance jumped to $280/month out of nowhere. No accidents, no tickets just the usual "rate adjustments."
I drive a 2017 Toyota Corolla, full coverage, and I’m with State Farm right now. I mostly use my car for commuting (about 30 minutes each way), and I’m in my early 30s.
For those of you with clean records, what are you paying, and who are you insured with? Thinking it might be time to shop around.
Appreciate any recommendations! 🚗💨
